I assumed that when i went to the 285s my mileage would either stay about the same or improve slightly on the highway... WRONG. I lost 2 MPG at the same highway speed. Its worse if I cruise at the same RPM that I did previously (1950), I did pick up about 5mph at that RPM but it sure didnt help mileage. I bought the smarty jr at the same time to adjust the speedo, and after 2 fillups I went from the stock software to the econo tune to see if it would help... nope no difference. These tires are heavy, but I didnt think they were that heavy. Maybe they filled them with sand instead of air when I had them installed. :-laf

I do like the look though, they fill the opening perfect.

From Toyos website, the 285/70/17 E weighs 53#, while the 265/70/17 E weighs 47#. I can't imagine that 24# of rolling weight could reduce mileage THAT much... was there ANYTHING else you did to your truck at the same time??

PS--just because I can't imagine it, doesn't mean it's no true, so please know that I am NOT trying to say your wrong, just wondering if maybe other factors could be at play.

35k sounds good to me... was that what you put on after you bought them from your freind?? How many miles d'ya think he put on them first??
He put 19,000 on them and I've put another 7,000 on them. As stated, zero tire maintenance from new aside from my reinstalling them front to back. Neither his nor my truck have been aligned from new. He's got the Kore Chase and I've got the Lorenz 2. 25. Not exactly ideal conditions for longlife. When these evaporate,I'll treat the new ones normally. They'll have about 28,000 on them when we get up your way.

Absolutely love my Nitto Durra-Grapplers. Once you get past the streety look of the tread it's all smiles down the road.

Mine are rated to 3970 lbs @ 80 psi.

They are M&S rated, did ok last winter in the snow, are super quiet and handle our 5th wheel just fine.

I put 39k on my first set and just went through what you are doing now. I got another set of the KO's for $1041 out the door plus $20 to throw the old tires out. These are ok for noise when new and get pretty loud by the end of their life. Snow traction is outstanding and are good in mud. They also require frequent rotation, like every 5k. These tires are 33" in diameter, and I thin 285/70's are like 32. 8, they are just a little narrower. I maybe lost a 1/2mpg when new but the traction and looks make up for the difference.

I suppose everyone will laugh at me but I just put on a set of Big O Big Foot A/T's 265 75 16 E. Paid $901. 00 with alignment, $200. 00 less then GoodYear Wranglers & a better warranty. I took a trip from Gardnerville to Grants Pass, OR than to Manteca,CA then back to Gardnerville with the RV & I cannot tell any differance from my old Wranglers. They are made by Cooper.

I've got 35K on my 285 Toyo AT's and it looks like I will get about another 10K out of them. I love the way they feel on the road and they are awsome in ice and snow. The Michilens that came with the truck new just flat out sucked in the ice and snow-like I was driving on ball bearings.

Im running the Pirelli Scorpion ATR, stock size. Bought them from tirerack.com and absolutely love them. I have about 30,000 miles on them right now and expect about 60,000 the way things are going (or more!). I rotate every 5000 miles, and cant tell any difference between them, the wear has been perfect. I run up and down the mountains on Colorado's I-70 twice a week, all year long. They've seen every type of weather possible and I cant say anything bad about them.

My last set was the Pirelli Scorpion in the stock size. I used them for 60K miles. They were to the tread bars when I pulled them off the truck. I also rotate every 5K miles. I replaced them with 285/75 R 17 Nitto Dura Grapplers. I lost 1 mile per gallon to the size upgrade. They make this tire in OE size as well and I've found them for less the $200 apiece. I like the Dura Grapplers just fine. Not too noisy and great in the rain. They handle fine and have a 3970 lb load rating.

So far I'm loving my bridestone dueler revo's. Time will tell about the mileage. Won't ever buy michelins again.

As for the size thing, the taller tires definitely look like they fit the truck better and for those of us who do go off road, every little bit of extra ground clearance helps.

I got 95,000 miles out of the OEM Michelins. They were like driving on ball bearings any time it rained.

I replaced them with Nitto Terra Grapplers in stock size. I'm going to get about 60,000 from this set and will replace them with the same thing.

They are super-quiet and have tons of traction, wet or dry.

I have the same tires (E rated) and find them to be excellent. They come with a 45k mile warranty. No pro rating, they replace them straight up. I have no doubts they will get to 45k miles with a 600 wear rating.

Is that $200/tire installed? Mine were $260/tire installed.
