OK, this weekend was scheduled to be the weekend I kill the dowel pin. Upon pulling the timing cover and messing with the pin and tightening the gear case bolts, I spotted something that made my heart skip a beat. My fuel gear is split!
I'm sooooo glad I caught this before in grenaded my engine. I called a buddy of mine to ask if he had spare gear and he said it happened to him last year. It blew the gear case, sheared the cam, crashed valves... . all sorts of mechanical mayhem. He had his pump R+R'd by someone and suspected that the gear nut was over-torqued on re-install.
I resealed the pump on my truck a few years ago when ULSD ate the seals. I followed torque spec, don't think I cracked this gear, but who knows...
It's really hard to see, but if you look at the pics, you can see the crack thru the hub. It goes all the way thru the hub to a hole in the gear and then all the way out the other side of the gear almost to the teeth. Man I'm glad this thing didn't blow. I think my next install will be under torque spec with some locktight. I'm soooo glad I got to learn this lesson the easy way. If you have doubts about your gear, pull that oil snorkel and get a mirror and check it out.
Now, my real question to the group: Anybody have a gear??? (pn 3914912)
