OK, this weekend was scheduled to be the weekend I kill the dowel pin. Upon pulling the timing cover and messing with the pin and tightening the gear case bolts, I spotted something that made my heart skip a beat. My fuel gear is split! I'm sooooo glad I caught this before in grenaded my engine. I called a buddy of mine to ask if he had spare gear and he said it happened to him last year. It blew the gear case, sheared the cam, crashed valves... . all sorts of mechanical mayhem. He had his pump R+R'd by someone and suspected that the gear nut was over-torqued on re-install.

I resealed the pump on my truck a few years ago when ULSD ate the seals. I followed torque spec, don't think I cracked this gear, but who knows... It's really hard to see, but if you look at the pics, you can see the crack thru the hub. It goes all the way thru the hub to a hole in the gear and then all the way out the other side of the gear almost to the teeth. Man I'm glad this thing didn't blow. I think my next install will be under torque spec with some locktight. I'm soooo glad I got to learn this lesson the easy way. If you have doubts about your gear, pull that oil snorkel and get a mirror and check it out.

Now, my real question to the group: Anybody have a gear??? (pn 3914912)

Setting timing

Oh what sadness Philip! Yes I am counting my blessings too.

I see gobs of P-pump gears on fee bay and only one VE gear. I'm still searching... . I'll call Cummins in the morning and cringe.

When you put yours back together (you did, right?) Did you check the timing? I'm going to check mine I believe. I noticed in the FSM it mentions a specific timing dial indicator. Now I was wondering if I can use my 2" travel dial indicator jigged up to the back of the pump. I don't really want to shell out for the special screw-in one.

Any tips?

WOW! Ok Andy i could have done without seeing this lol, since at end of month me and another member are tackling my KDP. I sure am glad you found that, the latter would have been a tear jerker for sure. .

Andy that is a spare engine now. The truck that was setting in was a D350 dually. In my area a 2WD dually doesn't bring much. I parted that truck out.

You can simply set the pump back to the alignment mark and know then that you'd want to bump the timing ahead about 1/8" past the alignment mark. Turn pump top towards the cyl head.

Many of us have the pump top right against the cyl head. At the moment I don't recall the numbers of what it is OE and what is 1/8" past the marks. I'd have to look.

Personally I would make sure everything is clean and burr free and torque it to spec.

Thanks Greenleaf, I just wasn't sure if I should re-verify the timing since I'm changing the gear. I will line up the 'E' mark on the gear as it was and set my pump at the position it was (about a short 1/8" advance).

I ordered the new gear from Cummins today. Got to thinking about it and figured there was no way I was putting another used gear in there with the damage it could do.

OK, will do. I'm just glad to have caught and defused this bomb. New gear will be here Tues or Wed.

Howdy Wyatt,

Yeah, I sure do feel lucky. That's why I wanted to post this. I hope someone else can catch this before it happens to their truck (if they have a cracked gear). I think the cause is over-torquing that gear nut. I'm certainly going to be real careful with the new gear!

VE pump gear new part number

Got my new gear today from Cummins. The old PN (3914912) has been superceded with 4932713. Let me tell ya, this new gear has almost double the thickness of metal in the webbing. I think they beefed this gear up. I feel better already. :D

I forgot to post the price. Sorry. 178 before, 193 after tax with me picking it up at the Cummins distributor. Not cheap, but way cheaper than repairing afterward. I still feel lucky. :D

I had the same thing happen to me. I bought one from the Case AG dealer for a 4bt forklift, if i remember right it was under $100 and still running strong

New Gear in and back on the road!

Howdy Group,

I finally got the new gear in and everything put back together. It's so good to drive it again and not worry about the KDP!

I wanted to put up a pic of the new thicker gear installed. It's hard to see, but that old gear I'm holding is about 2/3rds as thick as the new one. That new one has timing marks all over it! It must cover far more applications than just the few timing marks that are on my old gear.

The last shot is a 'just because' shot of my timing mark showing the slight advance. It was like this when I bought it, so I can't comment on the difference it may have made from stock.

I have resisted turning any screws or bombing anything. When I got this truck, Mysteryman asked me to call him, which I did. I enjoyed the lengthy discussion and insight into the 6-year design and testing of this truck. I told him I wanted a to get good mileage and reliability. Above all, I wanted it to run a long life. I trust the advice of a guru and hold fast to it.

Now if I could afford a second one, Bomb-On!
