Can anyone tell me what characters to look for in a 2014 model year VIN which would indicate a one ton Ram is equipped with an Aisin transmission, an 8' bed, and single rear wheels?

Thank you,

John L.

John,

Send a PM to Joe Donnelly. He's up to date on the codes/letter designations in the VIN on 13/14 trucks and should be able to give you the information.

You thinking about a new truck???

Alternatively, does anyone know where I might find a complete breakdown for character of the 2014 Ram VIN like that found at the beginning of the service manuals?

I've found several websites that decode VIN's, but they don't tell me what the individual characters mean.

Thanks,

John L.

Bill,

I've already pestered him once recently and hate to bother him again... he's a busy man.

Yes.

We need more cargo carrying capacity than my 2001 has, we've always wanted a 4x4, and frankly I wouldn't mind upgrading to a bit more comfort (quiet) and luxury (leather seats, etc.). Our 2001 is currently overloaded by a few hundred pounds... nothing serious... but a good excuse to start thinking about a move up to a new one ton.

At this point I'm doing research trying to see what my target truck might cost and I'm finding it difficult to adequately filter down to the options I want when searching for inventory on either the www.RamTruck.com or dealer websites. Ideally I'd like to find a white (preferred), deep red, or blue single rear wheel Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, or Laramie Longhorn 3500 somewhere in AZ, NM, or TX with an Aisin transmission and an 8' box. So far I'm mostly seeing dual rear wheel trucks in these states. SRW 3500's seem to be rare... understandably I guess considering what most buyers use a one ton truck for.

At this time a new 14 or 15 for me will not have the factory hitch preps at all. I will install a B&W GNRK 1314 gooseneck hitch for $439 and then go with the Companion RVK 3500 $879. I will have 20K towing and 5K pin ratings.

The GNRK 1314 is only 58lbs and looks easy to install. Think that is what Joe Donnely went with.

At this time that seems like the best way to go.

We could go test drive trucks for him!!! Then hit a pub and drink beer and call John! Tell him how the B&W results in only one large hole in the bed vs 4 or 5. Well there are the for small ones for the goose neck safety chain hooks. I mostly likely would not put those in until I needed them some day if ever. Chris

That sounds good! Would be interesting to see what a lighter than my truck with more power feels like.

I did not install the chain hooks on my 98 or the 11.

I got the info from rambodybuilder.com but sag2 has the same info above. I had to look at window stickers online to see if Rams i was considering had the Aisin.

sag2 and Joe,

Thank you for the links to the VIN decode. That'll be very helpful when I'm looking through a list of VIN's.

Chris,

For the foreseeable future we'll be sticking with a bumper-pull travel trailer, so no bed hitch prep is needed.

Thanks!

John, keep your MaxBrake! They may be worth more than retail in a bidding war. Chris
