Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) New Fan Clutch

Just installled a new fan clutch a few weeks ago and finally was able to tow the 5er to see the results. It was 102* the other day when we pulled the coastal range of moutains coming home. Total weight as about 16k. Climbing some of those 5-6% grades, the engine temp went to approx 195* maybe a little more and then just stopped there. And yes I did hear the jet engine under the hood, so I knew that the fan had kicked in. Once I dropped over the top. . temps went down pretty quick.

Is this about normal????

Now how do you get the stupid thing to go around town so the AC works at a stop light. The Cummins runs so cool the fan wont go on. Thinking of putting a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator just in front of the fan to create a hot spot for the fan clutch to see.

The temp sensor for the horton clutch fan is 205 degrees. 195 is a little low. I've had two now and they both work the same.

About half way between 195 and 230 on the gauge it will come on.

There is suppose to be a pressure sensor on the airconditioner line on the passenger side down by the air inlet line for the intercooler. With this switch, as the head pressure on the a/c pump increases, the switch will open and turn the fan on. My truck doesn't have one on it as of right now and I have the same problem. Hope this helps you guys out.

I had a similar complaint with the AC condenser not getting enough airflow. I added a slim electric radiator fan in front of the condenser behind the front bumper. I wired it through a relay and the compressor clutch circuit. The AC works much better at slow speeds.

It may have very well been around 200-205. . I just wanted to know if others see the same thing when the fan would kick on. Now with this temp would you still be running the AC or would you be shutting it off?????

Just want to know what to expect. I have had the truck 2 1/2 years and I would venture a guess that the fan clutch has never worked. . When the temp would start to get over 190*, the ac would go off and I would back out of it... .

Mine kicks in driving around town. Maybe the small cardboard idea isn't so bad? Are the radiators clear of bugs? That might stop the aitflow enough to cause problems.



WDanials, I don't think he has a Horton. Doesn't the Horton have a manual override switch to engage it?

No Horton, just plain old thermo fan clutch

Fan Clutch

RHarvey was the new fan clutch a severe duty? I just purchased one at O'reillys for $59. 00, they said it was ment to work with a/c and intercooler. The stock one i never hear it kick on. Does your a/c work any better?

I ordered the clutch from Advantage Dodge in New Mexico. . so it would be a oem stuff. I really haven't noticed. . my ac has always worked great. My wife did say that it was cold enough to freeze you out of there. .
