The part of the recall notification worth noting is Calif won't register your vehicle unless it has the current flash for emissions. Wouldn't be surprised to see more states doing the same thing! Nice to know GUV is taking such good care of use poor dummies who can't take of oursleves.

So will we be able to detect a difference in the way the truck runs after recalls of this sort, or is it just to enable the truck to handle the re-gen in a different way?

I haven't had any re-flashes yet but was wondering what I would experience when I take it in.

The last flash I had (BB Flash for 2009 trucks) was designed to regen more often (among others) and I really noticed w/ my mileage drop. Though the truck is running great, so that's the important part.

recall

To day my water pump started leaking when I was about 250 miles from home. I took it to a Dodge dealer in Charleston,SC. They replaced the water pump and done the new recall on my truck. On the way back home my mileage on the overhead increased by 1& 1/2 mpg more than it was reading on the way to charleston this morning. I couldn't tell any differents in the operation of the truck. My truck only has 20,432 miles on it. The water pump was the first time I ever had any problem with the truck. Has any one else had water pump problems.

This will make dealer visit #14 for my '08 mega with 28k... . non-maintenance,,,various issues... let's see, that averages to 1 visit every 2k... .

Everytime I hear that GMC truck month commercial... . let's just say it calls to me... and getting louder. Cummins has been making diesels for how long????

No one said you have to take your Dodge in. My truck has not seen a dealer in over a year and a half.

The last time I went was for an oil change and I had to argue with the dealer tech over greasing the front shaft. They claim that there was no fitting to grease. After I showed them were, the kid stated he never grease any truck on the oil change rack.

Just my $0. 02

Maybe one of the techs on this site can answer if this is a recall or just a tsb. With my dealer no more free flashes after 3/36 was up. Gotta love California if it is required and it is a non-warranty item.

I spoke with my dealer yesterday (Tracy Dodge) California. It is a recall and there is no charge for the update (J 35). It is required before you can pass the California Inspection.

I really wonder why this is the only time they have had a recall on a flash. I have complained to Chrysler about not being informed about flashes and nothing ever happened. The only way I knew about them was from this forum.

Also if this makes my mileage worse, I am going to be very unhappy about this.

You're driving a truck that has a very long history of almost bullet proof reliability and that met 2010 emissions standards three years early with very minor problems.

I have experiencd NO problems with mine but some few owners who don't drive or work their trucks very hard are having a few problems. The problems are not caused by Cummins but by our braindead federal government and the out of control EPA.

You're talking about buying a replacement truck with far less experience building diesel engines who will be attempting to meet new federal emissions requirements for the first time?

Good luck on your plan.

Harvey, I respect Cummins long history & thought I was getting bullet proof reliability - that's why I parted with the cash. However, hasn't been the case & it would seem I can thank the epa... dodge... AND cummins... and my lack of homework prior to getting into this mess. Buyer beware. When it hits the 5 year mark,,,if I can tolerate it that long will decide what to do most of the depreciation has already taken place and with its reputation - yikes. My comment on GMC wasn't directed at the duramax but their gasser. Then again by 2016 epa will probably screw up the gassers too.

I don't think it is logical or fair to blame Dodge or Cummins. They, primarily Cummins, have done an impressive job of creating or perfecting systems that meet the unreasonable no-soot demands of a bunch of twinkle-toed libs who don't like capitalism, automobiles in general (except DC limousines), or trucks in particular.

Perhaps you simply bought the wrong vehicle for your needs. A Cummins is a serious working truck engine. It could be driven as a grocery getter in the old ISB5. 9 configuration and I think my cab and chassis can also, but apparently the heavy load of emissions crap on the new pickups requires a duty cycle with more towing, hauling, and highway speed extended driving.

A GMC gasser is not even in the same vehicle category as your Dodge-Cummins.

I'm worried that the current bunch that runs the federal government will not even allow us to buy (or drive) trucks by 2016.

I got mine done today. I am not sure I feel any difference, I have read that guys (on other boards) feel more boost, and hear more "whistle. " I have also read that some feel a slight increase in response. For me the jury is still out.

I did reset the overhead, and the truck seemed to run slightly higher than it normally does as far as fuel mileage. I ran the same roads I always do in a 20ish mile freeway ride home.

They did do a couple of other non recall reflashes too. One was badged as a RRT 09-086. The other thing they did in addition to the recall and the other flash was a RRT09-079, which was install some heat shield on an O2 sensor.

I am scheduled to get mine updated on Tuesday. I currently have a Smarty Jr. installed. Do I need to get this or is the Smarty Jr. always going to overwrite this?

So... are you suggesting that I should wait to have it updated... at least until Smarty has an update available if I want to reload?
