I have been looking at tanks for quite some time now and I think I will probably be ordering one of these in the next month or two depending on what I can find out about them.





Do any of you have one of these?



40 Gallon Toolbox Tank
 
I went w\a tank from a local Farm Supply,gravity fed. Works fine. I think it was $99. 00. That was about five years ago. Cost now guessing $139. 00. Good Luck
 
We run three Transfer Flow aux tanks as well as three replacement tanks in work trucks and use several of their refueling tanks for remote generator fueling. Never had an issue and they are built VERY stout. The DOT rating is required for us because of work liability, but I would not hesitate to use them for my personal rig.
 
I have the 70 tank I did not spend the extra money for the fuel gage upgrade. And I am still glad I didn't get it, I just reset my trip meter as well as log my mileage. I know that I can go 1200 to 1500 miles before I need to fill up.
I had the Transfer Flow shipped to a nearby frt depot and picked it up there save a little on Frt that way. Installed it myself Good product a few bucks more. But it comes with a DOT rating.
 
I got the 50-gallon "Cross the Bed" tank in black with the TRAX II gauge. It fits in my shortbed with the Super Glide hitch. Best of all, it fits under my tonneau cover. I might prefer to have manual control over transfer, but the fully automatic unit works as advertised. Everything is included in the kit. I installed it myself. It's been working flawlessly for a couple of years now.

Transfer Flow may seem expensive compared to the "farm supply" units, but a top quality, thorough kit is a good investment.

The thing is it is not more expensive then the farm supply stores. A diamond plate toolbox/combo tank at Coastal farm and home is about $800 with no pump. At Northern tool I am looking at $6-700 for a combo box with no pump and $150 shipping. I may be able to get the transfer flow without paying shipping.
 
I've had mine for almost 2 years now with no problems. I've been very happy with it and wouldn't hesitate to do another one. I'm a believer in you get what you pay for...

Keep an eye on their website, often they advertise a $99 install special. If you are down near Chico, CA sometime check out their shop and factory. Great people, great facility.

It's almost worth a trip down there. I would have to check and see if they do saturday installs.





KBalzuweit I would love to carry more fuel, but this is a good tank and affordable. I need to have some room in the bed for when I upgrade my TT to a fifth wheel.
 
I have the 98 gallon tank

And I love it. It transfers fuel automatically, it sits below the bed rail (with the exception of the tank sending unit cover), the electronics modifies the stock fuel gage signal to read total fuel on baord, you can stand on it to wash the top of your truck. Its a top notch product. I have some pictures of my install in my thread on "axle weights with a 98 gallon transfer flow installed". You'll have to do a search I'm computer illiterate. You will be close if not over on front GAWR with a heavy fifth wheel and full of fuel. Ken irwin

I can just about guaranty that you'll be over GVWR with a 5th wheel in tow. In full trim, at the start of a trailer trip, my truck is about 400 lbs over GVWR, yet the combined weight is only 17,000 lbs (4,000 lbs under GCWR).



If I had a travel trailer instead of a 5th wheel, or a 1-ton truck, I'd be golden. Something to think about. Towing is only a small percentage of my miles, so it's a reasonable trade-off. But when I'm hooked up for trip, I do wish it was an 8-ft bed dually. That being said, I have zero complaints. The truck pulls my trailer beautifully.

I have a 75 gallon in the front of the bed then a Husky Slider 5th wheel and followed up by a 19x12xbed width tool box. Now that pretty much takes up all of a short bed:-laf.
 
I have a 70 gallon UFS Transfer Flow tank that I bought about five years ago. I installed it in my previous Dodge, ran it about 250k miles, then bought a new module and pump from TF and transferred the tank to my new truck which now has 225k on it. I am a strong supporter of TF. I think they build a great product and the young engineer who designed the tank will exchange e-mails and provide assistance to customers using their tanks.



I know they are much easier on the wallet but prospective buyers should be aware that gravity flow and farm type transfer tanks are not legal for on highway use. Nobody in law enforcement seems to care very much when it is for private use but I have heard of DOT ticketing commercial drivers for using the non-DOT approved farm tanks. Gravity flow tanks are specifically prohibited in DOT regs.



The cheap tanks frequently don't have baffles and aren't tested for impact or roll over as TF tanks are.



I don't work for the company, I'm just bragging on them because I think they are a great product.

Gravity flow fuel systems are allowed according to FMCSA reg 393. 65 (d) which reads as follows:



"Gravity or syphon feed prohibited. A fuel system must not supply fuel by gravity or syphon feed directly to the carburetor or injector. "



The mistake most people make, including myself at first, is to read the bolded heading without reading the remainder of the reg. As long as you are feeding to the main tank, gravity or syphon feed is legal.



However, I have the Transfer Flow 70 gal tank in my 03 and it has worked great. Many people use gravity feed with no problems, but then again I have seen some spills from gravity feed. I personally would not use gravity feed.

I stand corrected. As you said, I either didn't finish reading the paragraph or scanned over it without absorbing the important details. It makes sense that it could flow to a main tank.
