hello there new to this forum. but here is my issue i hope someone out there can help a fella out..

1998 12v 5spd 4x4 3500 dually.

Couple month back the transmission/clutch started acting up a bit. i work in the oil field and am restoring this truck so i pulled the transmission out and sent it off to be rebuilt while i was gone for a couple months. put the transmission and driveline back in the truck this weekend. get it all buttoned up and go to fire the truck up and it wont do anything. turn the key on and all the guages light up and everything as normal.

Fuel shutoff solenoid wont pull up on its own. if i pull it up it will hold. then the truck will start and run if i jump the post on the starter itself. it still wont do anything with the key. i checked with a test light and when you turn the key to start the yellow wire out of the ignition gets power at the column. i was not able to check on the starter.

before pulling the batteries out of the truck i noticed where all the wires go to the grid heater if i wiggle them here can hear the relays popping and stuff. im not sure if that has anything to do it or not.

checked all the fuses in the cab fuse box on drivers side and all fuses are good.. all the fuses under the hood check good too... im kinda lost as where to go now...

If the clutch safety switch doesn't fix the issue, it may be the starter contacts. My truck does this all the time when I let it set for an extended period which is often. The starter contacts inside the solenoid striker plate get oxidized and cause a blockage in the current transfer. Usually if I make several attempts at turning the ignition switch to the start position, it eventually fires right up. If the issue is really bad, you may have to rebuild it.

It is not unusual for the starter to get pretty nasty with oil, dirt, and diesel fuel leaking down onto it over the years. A removal, disassembly, good cleaning, and make sure the starter solenoid contacts are clean may be all that is needed.

I thought about pullin it out and cleaning it up. But when it jumped off with a screwdriver i didnt do it. I will pull it off when i get back in town to the truck. Prolly wont hurt anyways i need to rebuild the vacuum/power steering pump too.
