Troubleshooting RV waterheater?

This is mainly for the newbie RV owner. About two years ago during a cold snap we had, I found myself trying to locate some RV antifreeze with no luck at all. After checking several places I ended up at Autozone one night. I ask the night manager if they carried RV antifreeze, and he replied I'm not for sure, so he led me back to the antifreeze section. I did not find any, when he ask me as I was on the way out. He ask what does it look like, and I said it came in a gallon jug, and usually pink, and non-toxic for use in fresh water systems. "OH" we got the pink stuff",and I said yeah you do, but it's not RV antifreeze " not made to be put in fresh water system" IT'S TOXIC IF CONSUMED. He was trying to sell me eight dollar plus a gallon low-toxic Prestone. Yeah he said it's "pink" this is what you need. I argued with him explaining it was toxic, and not for use in fresh water systems, and he kept saying this is what you need "it's the pink stuff". I even had him read the back of the jug stating it was still toxic. When I finally left the store the more I thought about it, the madder I got. I thought "what if some one that was new to the RV world would of took his advice, and bought it on his word alone "this is what you need" (it's pink!) Point is anything you plan on putting in that fresh water system, and planning on drinking from it "beware " what it is. We never use it for drinking purpose ourselves, but some might. I would like to state I have nothing against Autozone what so ever. This could of happened any where with a non-knowledgeable person like this trying to help you.

I just blew out the lines and opened the low point so air is good, NO antifreeze
One gal would do it after by pass of water heater and do not forget the P traps and the toilet needs some pink stuff to . Air can do it but its chancy with all the turn and twist places for water to stand . Your choise , Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville KY

I did the "blow it out with air" one time. Never again!

You just can't get ALL the water out; and as mentioned above, you need antifreeze in the drain traps too.

Just paid $2. 58 a gal at Walmart. Stopped by an RV store while on the road and got a good laugh when they sold the same exact (they probley shop walmart) brand for $8. 95 a gal.

Air is good to start, and I usually follow up with the RV antifreeze (non-toxic). Had a toilet valve burst one time on air alone, not all the water came out like I thought. Point of the post is the "dumba$$" manager that was more concerned on selling me eight dollar a gallon "toxic" antifreeze. Guess you would had to been there.

At the local Wal-Mart they had some last years stock in the RV section for 2. 50 and at the same time located in the center of the Auto section had a large sign for the low price of Two for Six dollars and a large supply of a different brand of the same pink RV anti-freeze . Same stuff at a new reduced price Yea. Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville KY { entry level almost fifty years.

Tractor Supply Center (TSC) has it on sale for $1. 95 per gallon. I blow my lines out, then pump a gallon through the system to all the outputs, cold and hot, have never had a problem doing it this way.

Newbies beware

If you have a riser from the water controls to the shower head... be sure to open those valves (with pump and city water off) and drain that riser... . Trust me, it can be a real surprise the next time you use your rig after a freeze. :--)
