I have a friend with a '94 gasser with no heat. He had a mechanic quote him $1200 to replace the heater core. My friend doesn't feel the truck is worth the money, so he has been driving around with no heat. I was just talking to him about it today and I wondered if a guy could just cut part of the passenger dash off and gain easy access to replace the stuff. How big of a hole would be needed or isn't this a good solution? This is just an old well worn farm truck.

Thanks,

Dan

Dan, if it is in fact his heater core is junk send him to me in northeast Iowa with the truck and we can get him in and out in about 3 hours with a good used heater core for around 150. 00 and he wont have half his dash missing. You would have to cut at least half of it out to remove the heater core. The dealer gets 16 hours to R&R a core so I can see how the huge bill comes in. Before he makes any decision I would check to make sure the air control door is opening to the heat side first. Also make sure coolant level is full.

before you change the core go to the chevy dealer and get a can of prestone super flush it is an acid and a neutralizer in a 2 part cam it looks like a cleanser can i use them all the time to clean heater cores and radiators that clog up with dexcool(or other extended life coolant) when it starts to brake down. follow the directions exactly and he will have great heat in no time. provided the blend door is working properly. it is not the same super flush at the parts store and it costs about $15. let me know if it works for him

whats the difference in the product from a Chevy dealer to the one at an auto parts?

the one at the dealer is an acid and eats up the broken down coolant. kinda like drano for your radiator/heater core. the one at the parts store is just not that strong. professional strength that requires flushing and neutralizing or store strength that just requires filling up with coolant. the dealer one works 99. 5% of the time
