Squeaking noise for 5.9 2007

p0148 fuel delivery error after nozzle swap

During the past month I have heard two very noisy 3rd gens on the road. They were both 06~07 5. 9's and sounded much like a second gen. Lots of rattle and typical old diesel clatter. The most recent was last Sat. where I was able to ask the owner what mods he had. He said it was all stock and had 106K on it. As he left it started and immediately died, then restarted again and ran fine. Ah ha! I thought. Could it be that the FCA will make the engine a lot louder when it's starting to fail?

I have been wondering about my FCA as I just got back from a 4700 mile trip. I would ping a lot at light throttle. 58,000mi.

My '06 is loud and pings and has about 580,xxx miles and 3 of the injectors have never been out of the truck. My '04. 5 injectors have recently been rebuilt and balanced and it is extremely quiet, more so than before the injectors were rebuilt.

Godspeed,
Trent

I have always thought my 06 has been louder than other ones that I hear idling. It was that way before the Jr. and still seems to be that way...

My buddy has a fresh (22K miles) 06 for me to compare things to. His truck has always been night and day more quiet than mine (stock except for SmJr) so when I hear one that's markedly louder than mine, I take notice. Both of the trucks I heard appeared to have stock exhaust too.

my truck has almost 50K miles on it, and has always been noiser than others. . I jsut attribute it to mass production parts. I feel that if I had a hand built engine that was blueprinted, degreed in, and a flow matched set of injectors, it would be measurably smoother and quieter... Oh well,. let it be loud, I have already upgraded the stereo!

I dont want to start a fight here but some by the mere mention of fuel lube start calling others ignorant and all sorts of other foul I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER. But I have used lube in fuel from the 1st tank and I meen the 1st tank when they filled it at the dealership. Son and a few others are of this camp and have not had ANY fuel system problems. Others are of the other camp and believe that NO fuel lube is the way. Some have a tremendous amount of injector problems. With the exception of a few the motors have been left stock.

Mileages all vary so it would be hard to define the amount of noise by mileage but just wondering if any of the above use fuel lube or not. I have 100K on mine and listening to it compared to others its quite. My son and I have more than the stock filters on as do most of the ones we compare to. Just a thought that I would find interesting as to do you and its loud or you dont and its not loud.

I have used some fuel conditioners in the past... never on a schedule with them... just every great once awhile... I currently have the stock filtration, but that will be changing soon.

That does bring up the idea of removing more of the disolved air from the fuel to make it quieter. Several of the aftermarket pump systems are very good at removing air from the fuel, which will make the engine quieter.

What do you do to put 580K on an '06?

It could be that the air taken out of the fuel is the reason for the quiet. I have an AD100 and really have had no problems with it other than just a loud humm but that was taken care of with rubber mud flap on each side of the frame mount.

Bought the '06 in January 2012 with 533,xxx miles on it. The original owner delivered oil field equipment with it, I deliver new camping trailers to dealers.

My truck makes more noise than when it was new. It also sounded different after my CP3 was replaced. Not louder, just different, hard to describe.

I spend winters in AZ and it always seems to get louder down there. After I get home to MN in the Spring it gets quieter with the bio-diesel that is mandated here. Must be the extra lube in the fuel.

Keep in mind also that the ECM advances the timing when the engine is cold. In cold weather, my signature truck with the Rokktech sounds like a 12 V for the first mile or so.

Have noticed both mine from brand new, bone stock, low mileage b-20 fuel, get much louder, not quite 2nd gen but still a louder solid lower bit smoother rumble.

'07 carried a yard of ballast gravel for a year w/ 2 long trips and I pulled hard as I could whenever accelerating, about 35K miles.

'06, 12k miles, no long trips but all the short stuff I carefully pull about hard as I can on accelerations, Smogged a 3 on a scale of 40 for the Snap Throttle here in Seattle.

I'd sure like to try muffler delete, CAT only and more Intake turbo music.

All software is factory, dealers not been plugged into either rig.

My 06 sounds like a 2nd Gen truck. It rattles and clacks, but it runs great. No smoke, great power, decent economy. It doesn't use oil or make oil. It remains completely stock with 86K on the clock. I have pulled up next to other 3rd Gens in traffic that were as quiet as a gas truck.

I have one of the quietest 3rd gen's I have heard. The mods that made the most different were cam/turbo/timing/6. 7 damper.

One thing about the 06-07's is they run more exhaust valve last, so they will have more valve train noise.

I recently put a 6. 7 damper on my dad's 06 and tightened up the exhaust valves to . 023 vs . 026 and it was MUCH quieter at idle.

My motor is also quieter when I run B5 or B20, I think its from the lubricity.

I also concur with the valve adjustment, and at every 50k for me. I don't care what other folks say, it makes the engine more quiet. Stanadyne every tank also helps. Of course, any type of programmer that messes with pilot injection or timing is also going to have an effect on noise.
