Well, the last update was, they got the speed sensor issue cleared. Not sure which speed sensor, or how it was cleared ( talking to the service rep, might as well be talking to my dog, he knows more about my truck). The tech drove the truck and what do you know, the same MF'n codes came back for the actuator. So now, they want to recalibrate the actuator and see if that fixes it.
I test drove a HEMI Limited thursday. More of a luxury car, than a truck. Pretty nice. 0-60 the HEMI was faster, 50-80 wasn't as fast as my Cummins. We let it idle in the dealership while the salesman showed me all the features. It sounded healthy, and thirsty. It probably burned 5 gallons just sitting there. It was a NICE truck. You guys with Limited's, WOW.

That turbo does have a speed sensor. The larger version on Mack MP7’s have sensor troubles and it’s usually a harness issue. I understand that due to warranty, they must follow protocol, but it gets to a point where the men are separated from the boys. I’m sure that speed sensor can be graphed and monitored in wiitech.

I watched the turbo speed while on my way back home from Montana with the AlfaOBD. I saw 113k when pulling a hill in NV, when the actuator was working properly. When I monitored the speed, it seemed normal. 30k to 50k cruising on flat ground.

Dealer called today. Truck needs a turbo. 48,000 miles and it needs a freakin turbo. What a joke. VGT, more like Waste Of Money...... I run the exhaust brake all the time and it still failed or got plugged or whatever happened. This time it's under warranty, what happens next time? I get to shell out $5000?
Is there some old dumb waste gate turbo I can put on this thing and still make power and pass smog?

I’m betting you don’t need a full turbo just the actuator. This dealer hasn’t got a clue about how things work and is just throwing money at it. Your money that is. Time to get it out of that shop and to someone that knows how to fix these trucks.

I thought it was good it needed a Turbo as it would be covered under the warranty then and that was the way to get the whole part replaced? The actuator was not being covered separately.

But agree that's not a whole lot of miles and understand your frustration going back and forth on this one.

Good luck with the repair, I would take the new Turbo at this point and run it.

I'm glad they're putting on the turbo. It doesn't cost me anything. Then I can go another amazing 50,000 miles before it needs another turbo! By then it should need an EGR and maybe, if I'm lucky, a new SCR!! These new diesels are a money pit. Thanks EPA.

Now, do I search craigslist and auto trader for a good ol' 5.9, or just get a new RAM with the 6.4? I bet these trucks aren't worth what the 5.9's will be worth in 10 years.

Thats speculation, but in the diesel pickup market, the CTD is still the best choice in many opinion. IMHO, the major difference between the 6.7 vs. 5.9 market today, is that the market is flooded with newer trucks. Production was really cranking with these, and there appears to be more turnover, making me think that many of these newer trucks were leased.

HE!! I would take a complete OE turbo under warranty at 48k if it were offered to me.

Got me there, so would I . I just wonder , and I’m really suspicious of the dealership’s service Tec knowing what they are doing, if he really needs it. Guess time will tell.

(Offtopic slightly). Energetic content of diesel one-third greater than gasoline. Often reflected in price. 22-mpg in a diesel compared to gas = 15-mpg to give same fuel price per mile.

Do the numbers. Today’s diesels aren’t going to significantly outlast gassers where the miles are commuting, not commercial. 10k miles per year is a gasser.

Hell, you ain’t even gotta open the hood the first 100k miles on today’s cars & pickups. Half the reason for diesel was no more points, plugs and carb adjusting. AND cheaper fuel. Those advantages are gone.

A commercial outfit pulling trailers starting at 14k and up only ones still in the diesel game.

An air ride half ton would likely suffice. I’d rather have it work hard once in a while than a 1T that never works hard enough over significant miles.

OP, what’s your Average Mph (lifetime)? [Odometer miles divided by Engine Hours].

With big trucks it’s the OTR firms still buying 15L engines when they should be buying 13L. That, and the high idle time, is who gets in trouble.

avg mph? 39 mpg this year? 18

It's not the engine I don't like, it's all the smog crap that goes with it.

Has anyone replaced their SCR system yet? How much is that? I know when one goes out at work on the ISL engine in the Freightliner's it's about $5K.

The truck is still at the dealer. Called on it today, said they had the turbo in stock but not the gaskets? WTF? Sounds like Horse crap to me.

Very rarely does the whole SCR system get replaced. Nothing happens to the cat itself. It’s parts like the heater, pump, injector. The pump and heater can be pricy, but hopefully those prices will come down.

Following this thread. Hoping CMGofast's issue finally gets resolved.

Jeesh, is this what i have to look forward to? never owned a diesel before until i got a new 2016 3500 (to replace my 454 suburban for towing).
just hit 40k on the odometer and the solenoid shift pack went out on me before i could get it in for the recall. not fun limping around : )
i do a fair amount of late night remote highway towing and don't want to be stranded. i got used to carrying a bunch of spare parts for the suburban but don't know a damn thing about my cummins.

When these trucks run they are Un stoppable. I've never been stuck on the road. At 126K miles it only went into limp mode once right after a reflash. The program they installed proved to be wrong and had to be re written only delay was RAM having to resubmitting the program for EPA approval. Disconnecting the Batts and touching the terminals together got it out of limp and back on my way.
I should add the Truck's Computer not waking up every now and then when you unlock the door and go to start it is also another NOT HAPPY moment. but so far it comes back every time after half a dozen lock and unlock cycles of the key fob.
That said Unless RAM steps it up and gets their head back in the QUALITY CONTROLL game I will not be buying another one. I stood behind CHRYSLER back in the 1980's believing they were fully committed to building a better product. And they did. My 89 was a great truck. My 02 was good until... But that is another story I'm not the only one that ended up getting a new truck after that dealership fixed them. 05 almost flawless. The 12 junk. the 13..... well lets say when it works it great.... When...
