What's the latest?

Where can I get Texaco MTX 1874 or GM#12345349 for reasonable?

I'm happy with the performance of the OEM stuff, but may have a leak and am going to change it in conjuction with clutch replacement this weekend.

Only 78k on the ticker.

BTW I mistakenly ran 80-90 gear oil in a F-150 transmission (mazda built 5-speed) for years before I saw in the service manual that it was supposed to have ATF in it. Changed it. No difference. Great transmission until 330,000 miles when I sold it.

Trans lube

I just replaced the oil in my NV5600 with Redline MTL. It shifts better than before the change. My trans always blocked to some extent with the original fill. For those who don't know what this means, the transmission would just simply refuse to go into gear without gorilla force on the shifter. And that can damage the synchronizers. This blocking made it almost impossible to downshift to bring the engine up to redline for better E-brake performance. Now it is fairly easy. It might get a little easier as time wears on. I hope so.

Hey Lordsman; without going into a ton of information here...

The NV 5600 calls for 9. 5 pints of Chrysler's # 4874464 Lube,(Replaces MS-9224).

Amsoils replacement is either of 3, all are 5W-30.

1/ # XLF, a Series 2000 oil. API: SL/SJ/CF .

2/ # ASL, also a Series 2000 oil w/ a slightly higher rating. API: SJ/SL/CF, ILSAC GF-3 (both may be used in the 5600).

3/ # HDD, a Series 3000 oil, API: CH-4/CI-4/CF-2/CF/SL. This one exceeds most anything out there and is the one I would use if we were talking about my vehicle !!!

Note, If one were to have a problem when using this oil where recommended, I would strongly suspect that there was a contributing factor !!

Hope this helps. .

Penzoil / Quaker State makes a direct replacement for the fluid. It meets the spec MS-9224 from Dodge. Here's a link to the product on the Quaker State website. I just ordered a case of 12 qts from the Tucson Distribution Center. I think the price is about $50. Hopefully it will show up tomarrow. I only need 6 quarts (5 for the transmission + a spare), and I will probably sell the other half case to a TDR member for my cost + shipping.

I picked up the case of Synchromesh Fluid from the Penzzoil Quaker State distribution center here in Tucson today. Price was $51 + tax for 12 qts.

If anyone want to order any, call 800-486-6457 and ask for the phone number for the distribution center in your area.

The Pennzoil Quaker State part number is 3501 for 12 one quart bottles. It meets the MS-9224 spec from Dodge for the NV5600.

Here is what is being put in them MTX fluid 12550 01874 it is a texaco product it is the same oil that is in the 3500 trans which know is a miller product ,at the factory

Well DUH, Got Smoke? works at a GM store. I went by there yesterday and got GM#12345349 and put in the 5600 today.

$30 something for 5 quarts.

How did you drain the 5600, did you open the very large hex plug and use a suction tube? If so what size is that hex key (allen wrench) ??? Did you use the same hole to fill with and to what level?

The big fill plug takes a 17mm allen socket. I welded a nut onto a bolt so I could use a regular socket. :D

I think draining is like the 4500 and that the lower side cover bolts are drilled thru.

Did that today. Tried jamming two nuts on the bolt, but it wouldn't hold. Welding works. Bottom bolt on the side cover will let the juice out, but you should go ahead and pull the driver's side cover. Then you can wipe off the magnet and fish out any other large pieces of miss-shifts.

The cover on the passenger's side doesn't provide any access worth having.

“But you should go ahead and pull the driver's side cover. Then you can wipe off the magnet and fish out any other large pieces of miss-shifts”.

What are you guys doing?

You should always pull the right cover off to drain the oil, so you can get all the oil out and to clean it. Even with the cover off you will need to use some rags to remove the oil and brass chips from the bottom of the case.

I know the NV4500 has Magnets on the Lift side cover, but the last two NV5600 that I changed oil on there was no Magnets 2001 & 2002.

Can any one tell me when they deleted the Magnets?

The passenger side cover doesn't allow for any "extra" access on mine. I can swipe nearly to the middle of the box from the driver's side cover. There was a magnet on the bottom of my Y2K, 1. 25" input shaft 5600.

Only reason I'll ever pull the passenger side cover again is to install a "Fast Cooler".

NV5600

I changed my 5600 transmission lube out at around 12,500 miles.

I removed the drivers side PTO cover to get all the oil out and to clean the small flat magnet that lies right on the bottom center of the housing (about 1 1/2 square). Like Wade said, there's much more room to get to it all from the drivers side access.

There were very small amounts of metal shavings/dust on the bottom and magnet but nothing too serious tho. I figured it's just the break-in wear particles. At least the magnet is doing it's job!

I used the super blue RTV silicone to seal the cover and around the bolt heads. Filled it up with Amsoil series 3000 HDD 5W/30 oil and it does shift better and just got back from a trip to West Va. this past weekend towing our 26' TT through the mountains and have had no problems or leaks of any kind.

I found Pennzoil Synchromesh Transmission Fluid at a local Auto Zone or other parts store several months ago. Product info on the container indicated the lube met the Dodge specification number for our NVG-5600 transmissions. I didn't memorize the number but had it written in a tablet I took with me when shopping for the lubricant.

I think the store must have accidentally mispriced the lube because it was only about $4/quart.

i recently changed from Texaco fluid to Redline MTL ... shifting improved somewhat, however,i then added an 8oz bottle of Prolong transmission friction modifier... . the difference was SIGNIFICANT... . i realize long term teliability MAY be an issue,so we'll see!!!;) ... anyway, thus far, im pleased with the improved shifting quality..... "to each his own". . THANKS ROWDY!!!!!

... ..... GOOD LUCK... . tom:)

I added the Prolong to my last CTD, it was an automatic but it did improve the shift feel. I don't know about long term reliability since I traded it in at 56K miles. Like they say when you pay the bills you get to make the decisions ;)
