Hey guy's I am a little late to this debate, since we were camping earlier this week. I really don't think it makes that much of a difference if the oil is hot or cold when you do your oil changes. I have taken oil samples with oil being hot and cold and my reports back have shown the same results in the oil analysis report has far as to debris in the oil, such as wear materials and contaminates and so forth.
So, I do my oil changes cold now and it is easier to work on the engine when it is cold.

I’m just going to leave this right here ;)

Seriously, we’re a maintenance minded and passionate bunch. I guess that we do this at all is fine. Its just that I’m a stickler for a book procedure, if I know about it.

Are you sure that’s for the diesel 5.9?

Every FSM I’ve looked at is different than that. Operating temp is not mentioned for the diesel. There is a temp listed, but it’s not operating temp.

I don’t have the FSM’s on my phone, but I’ll see if I can find a copy.

EDIT:

I opened up the 2004 FSM since you have an 04.5. My 05’s FSM said the same.

I always followed step 1, there just was sometimes a delay before step 2.

Nothing wrong with following the book, but it needs to be the correct page.

After having ran an aftermarket oil temp gauge I can tell you that at 140° ECT the oil temp is going to between 100°-120° , only about 1/2 of operating temps.

Neither. I torch via the oil filler cap, the flame is attracted to the polarized filter canister; finds it's way through the oil galleys, and bypasses the valve stem seals & all other soft parts.
Whilst torching.....through the wheel well.......or do you remove the intake?

You should know better than to ask me an unprofessional question.
I like your " Fire 'N Ice" approach. But do you let it drain o'renight? Or for a fortnight?

Detroit's take - "Change the engine oil only when the engine oil temperature is approximately 60°C (140°F) or higher. Changing cold engine oil will result in extended drain times."

Working in a fleet shop and on my personal vehicles I like to drain it warm, not HOT - but sometimes we have to do them ASAP and hot oil drains faster, but 200+ deg oil is no fun. Makes it drain quick though - seems thinner than water at that point. We are using 10w30 @ 75,000 intervals now(DD15 approved to at least 80,000) UOA done at every oil change.

Are you guys an OTR operation?
Which 10w30?
Who’s oil lab?

Cummins uses 140° as well, but that's ECT not oil temp, and also not the operating temp that was quoted in here several times previously.

Yes, 200° oil sucks and is still quite thin on a 15w-40.
