Just curious to if anyone knows where the Oil Temperature sensor is..

I notice a few times now, more so in the colder weather that if I'm cruising down a county road for somewhere around 10 minutes or so, my oil temp will be about 195-201 on average and given this a fully warmed up truck.
Now if I slow down to about 10 mph and make a turn and get back up to speed again, the oil temperature instantly to about 160.

This doesn't make sense to me for a few reason because isn't the oil "cooler" a coolant-to-oil heat exchanger, and at this point the coolant is a steady 190-195 so the oil really shouldn't get any colder than the coolant. Endless there's an air-to-oil heat exchanger on the front of the truck I don't know about.

It appears this is a fake gauge, just like oil pressure.

Why Ram felt like giving us any fake gauges is beyond aggravating, but there isn't much I can do about it.

Great.. I really do like to look at those gauges.. give me a false sense of security.

I heard that the oil pressure gauge was just based off of other things and not all that accurate but it makes sense now that the oil temperature would be the same.

I wonder if anyone else has reported the same temperature reading as me.

Yeah mine will do it too.

Most of the time the oil temp seems to be an accurate guess, based on what I saw for oil temp on my 05.

Bottom line, oil temp or pressure were never an issue on my 05 so I won't be adding those gauges to my 18.

i Don’t know why but it bothers me, I like to know what my truck is running at.

I was very happy to see that this truck came with those gauges, not too happy that they’re not accurate.

The oil temp is fairly accurate, it is based on an algorithm. Oil pressure not accurate. But as I have said many times, when was the last time you saw an oil related failure in one of our trucks. Almost never.

It's funny how we get used to gauges AND dummy lights. I know I'm a gauge guy too, but the lights grab your attention... where this has come to mind is my 1978 Dodge Ram Lil Red Express Truck doesn't have a single dummy light, so there is real meaning to checking the gauges. Who woulda thunk anyone would ever comment about NOT having dummy lights?

You know this discussion about gauges, I received a FREE EGT probe with my Edge CST2 Monitor, but still haven't mustered the motivation to take the cold air box and turbo hoses off to install it. Of 6 Ram Cummins trucks I've owned (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th) this is the FIRST truck I haven't installed an EGT gauge (YET). Because I have it AND being a type A, yo can be sure one day, I will post I have installed it.

Cheers, Ron
