It sounds like yours is missing... . should be at the end of that hose.

I too just re-ran my breather to just behind the front body mount on the driver side. I thought it was a slick setup until I started reading this thread. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what would freeze in the tube. Its not like there's is a lot of liquid flowing through, mostly just vapor, and the tube is 3/4" diameter, but if you guys say its froze on yours, I'l have to go back to the drawing board. I would think a short line exiting straight down would stay fairly warm from the engine?

JoelPry, I was under the same immpression until I had mine on for a few months and started to see this grey "gunk" dripping from the end. The straight shot down to the track bar is working for me right now. I don't have the bottle attached and was just crawling all under the truck last night while installing a grill guard. I have no oil anywhere on the truck, must be "slipstreaming" away.

Thanks, just got back inside from working on mine, I cut the tubing and shot it straight down next to the washer bottle, just next to the frame on the outside, there was a cable there that I attached it to just to secure it

I just installed a new catch bottle. I ordered a 1 qt plastic Summit Racing bottle with breather and drain valve . It looks like the same one that Genos used to sell in a kit. I will closely monitor it for freezing problems. I was getting real tired of the mess with the stock setup!!

Help me on this - I just ran a new hose all teh way back to the transmission skidplate where I mounted the bottle. I think the hose essentially runs downhill, but not sure. If you just run the tube doen - I can't help but believe you'll have an oily mess, just like we do now. I've looked carefully and it doesn't look very easy to remount under the fender - where exactly are you guys mounting the thing???

Anybody know if the 99 had the bottle? There isn't one on mine. I wipe the area around the bottom of the tube when changing the oil, but it doesn't seem too bad.
I'm not sure if I need a bottle in front of me or a frontal lobotomy. #ad

99's did not have a bottle. The amount of oil dripping supposedly tapers off after the engine breaks in. I guess it would increase after 300,000 miles or so.

I've been using that Geno's breather kit for a while. It seemed to work great for 3 or 4 months. But basically I just moved the mess somewhere else. The vapor saturated the breather filter, and it runs down the inner fender and up into the wheel well, and so on.

Anyway my only concern with running an open line underneath the truck, even at the cross member is at highway speeds the oil would sling up under the truck, onto the rear end, gas tank and so on. I don't care if it drips onto the ground.

I have over 140,OOO miles on a 98. 5 and over 40,000 on a 2001 that from day one received a 22'8" long piece of 3/4" heater hose and routing all the way to the back of the truck betwen the receiver hitch and the bumper with no problems. We are in the south but received 31 days straight of below freezing (many with lows in the teens and low 20's) weather this last December/January - no problems (the trucks run about 5,000 miles a month)! The local Cummins dealer liked the fix and even commented that because the exit is in plain sight you can easily tell if vapor is coming out.

Hey can't quarrel with that kind of testing. I called and talked with a Cummins Tech, and he said that He wouldn't run it clear out the back though--he thought it might creat to much back preasure--but hey you've got the miles to prove it--that makes me feel better as mine runs back to the skid plate.

Thanks for the real world info.

Ghostroller, not looking to flame you and I am glad it's working out for you, but there is a world of difference between below freezing and teens and single digits or lower IMHO. I was never worried about the normal lows here, around the mid teens in the dead of winter. It's those short, week long single digit periods that concerned me. If I lived down South, mine would be the same as your's.

Moto Head, that's the same reason that I did not bother to install the bottle back on my re-route, your only moving the problem to another area. Mine is located at the track bar and I have NO oil on the underside of my truck.

I put a heater hose on mine and went over the throttle linkage (to keep the oil in the cam cover) and then added a qt milk (white plastic) bottle with holes in the top sides. It sits next to the trans, at an angle) on the cross member and if the water level gets high, it will flow out the holes that are in the sides. The hose end does not go in too far thru the cap and have had no problems in about 40k miles with freezing (been in colder areas and did check it). The 5spd is "rusty" from day one and not enuff oil gets out to coat anything. Have dumped the bottle every oil chg and one time was about 5/8ths full of water. This method give the hose a longer run up hill and more time for the oil to drain back (might not be a gud idea but it works for me). Havent had any bad samples ('cept for the sillycones) and going to do the 45k this week (using the 7500 change interval since the 3rd oil change @ 7500). Just another 0. 015$ opinion.

PS: will be in Laughlin(g), NV this Sunday (4-8) tru Wed morn, anyone in the area?? E-mail me and maybe we can hook-up.

Thanks Bigsaint, I have custom made a very complex system using the Geno's kit. If that doesn't work, I will just run a line under the truck... MH

I eliminated that immpossible to get to bottle right away. I just extended the hose form where the bottle used to be straight down towards the ground. I cut the hose level with the lowest point on the truck. Whatever small amount of vapor comes out at any given time is quickly diperssed into the air and leaves no residue, ANYWHERE. I checked all over under the truck and found no oil residue. A compnay called Walker engineering makes something called and "AIRSEP" system that basically makes your truck a "Closed cranckcase" system. This idea works but, I would rather go the simpler, cheaper and proven route of the $1. 75 length of hose. Besides, if Cummins wanted a closed crankcase, they would have made it that way

hey big wheel, check out this web site,I have read some on this thing called air sep,it actually connects to breather tube, has a fitting that hooks on to turbo and gets drawn thru, supposedly relieves all pressure build up in motor therfore no pressure on gaskets and no more smeg or blow bye to follow is web adress. walkerairsep.com,I am thinking about it for my 98 1/2 24 valve, all we have on these is breather tube and it is very bad. good luck jdm joe
