on-board air

I'm getting ready to install on board air and want some of your ideas. Looking at air for exhaust brake, horns, air bags and one day soon another air ride seat.



The 12 volt jobs are nice, but for less money I can get a 110V rig and power it thru my inverter. I beleive that will make air quicker, but wonder what down-sides any of you see. Some of the smaller units with comp. , tank,valves, gauge, regulator, shutdown switch, etc. can be broken down and mounted outside the right frame under the bed. Less than $120 at Sears, etc.



Give me some ideas.

110v air compressors pull an AWFUL LOT of current when they first start; an inverter may not be up to it. That's why air compressor motors are "special application" types and different from other 110v motors in a shop. Hopefully one of those electrical engr types will respond and give you the figures/formulas to work with.

I know this would be costly but does anybody make a compressor that could be driven from the PTO ports that the 6 speeds have?

I saw this once on a street roadster. The alternator was mounted under the car off the frame just back of the transmission and there was a fan belt around the drive shaft to the alternator. It should work with the belt up close to the front U Joint so shaft angle was less of a problem and maybe the compressor belt adjuster heavily spring loaded so the compressor could float a little with driveshaft movement

If you're thinking exhaust brake go with the Pac brake. It comes with a small compressor that runs it and can be plumbed into a storage tank for other applications. It works fine for me. Now if only I could find a set of airbags I like and a good horn...

I now have Kilby's on-board air and it is great. Before I was using an 12v electric that is supplied by Firestone for their air bags. It would take about 8 minutes to pump up a 5 gallon tank.

Go with Kilby's on board air system you won't get a better setup.

I have the system on mine and it will give you all the air you can use. The system will let me run air impact wrenches with no problem. Suggest you use either a 2. 5 gal tank or a 5gal storage tank if you put a lot of air powered options on. I have the air bags, grover air horns ( blows cars right off the lane in front of you). The 12 volt systems just can't keep up with the demand, and take forever to inflate a tire.

I for one would love to run Kilby's setup, when can I get it for a 3rd gen? I assume DWendt is also 3rd gen.

Soon hopefully. I'm going to AFE tomorrow to get one of their intake systems to see if it'll allow more room for the compressor. The '03's are different than the '02's BTW. Once the intake is out of the way, we need to fab a new bracket. The plan is to get this new bracket kit fabbed up in the next month. We'll see how it goes.
