I have almost 180k on the truck I have used rotella or dello for the last 100k miles usually change the oil around 4k miles. besides doing the head never dropping the oil pan. just wondering when does a person start pondering sludge build up. I have never put any additive in my oil yet. I do hear of some using marvel myst additive. or other stuff. wondering is it really needed. is it good insurance to start doing this. what are your thoughts on this for long term. I would like to see the truck get 300k out of it before considering any major overhaul on it. thanks for your input. I still dont really have any major oil leaks or oil lose. usually around 1/2 quart or less seems when I change fluid.

It's been a tried and true fact... if it ain't broke... don't fix it. With LSD and blends of oils, sludge build-up is not a major problem as it used to be. If there are no leaks or your truck isn't consuming oil... then enjoy the ride. Keep doing what your doing. As far as oil additives... not reccommended... I use Marvel in my fuel tank... 6 oz per 10 gal fuel. Search the TDR mags... there is a good article on oil and additives. Don't remember which one off the top of my head. Happy motoring.

Mine has 517,000kms (320,000k) always used rotella 15/40 with no addative. engine is clean when valve cover removed to do valve adjustment. Oil changed at 6000k with fleetgard stratapor filters. Uses 1 pint of oil between changes. The engine has never been apart has original vp-44 ,and injectors. I have added mmo and howes meaner to every tank of no. 2 diesel fuel. works for me.

Great answers. Advice from a 12-valver. try doing an oil analysis. Only $15. I think you will find you are changing the oil too early.

I run Rotella fully synthetic for 10k miles changing the filter at 5k. At 10k miles, oil still had plenty of life.

Your engine will let your know when it is time to overhaul.

thanks. for the thoughts will not add anything to oil. I changed my oil out due to my own thinking. stock to mild truck I can see 5-7k miles on oil change pending where you live. I dont consider my truck stock or mild. but the ammount of stop and go short distance driving I have to do lately has me concerned on the oil ability to do its job. I do use fleetguard filters. or napa gold second choice. thanks for the reply
