My Dad has an '89 auto with the US gear, I don't know when it was installed but its OLD. Works great, and clunks terrible when engaged.

Okay, so can anyone clarify the fuel tank issue?? I am thinking of a US gear on my 96' but I dont want to lose fuel capacity.

US Gear after TCase?

I've recently emailed US Gear about installing one of their units AFTER the transfer case in my 05 quad cab. I don't ever foresee needing OD in 4wd and don't really like modifying the driveline by installing the US Gear unit between the G56 and the transfer case, not to mention modifying the gas tank.

US Gear doesn't at this time make an adapter to mount their unit on the back of the transfer case and from the conversations I had with them, aren't interested in designing one. It seems to me that they are missing a number of sales as I can't be the only one out here that doesn't want to mod my truck to the extent required to install their unit. I'm not interested in a GearVendors unit as I had one on the rear of a C-6 Ford trans. The GV worked fine, as I was using it as a fourth gear in the C-6, but it always seemed to darken the oil in the unit very quickly, which I equated to clutch wear. I only used the GV unit for about 10K miles but was always concerned about how long the clutch would last.

Does anybody know of an adapter that would allow a US Gear unit to be mounted on the rear of the transfer case? Also, I wonder if a few more emails to US Gear about a rear mounted unit would make them reconsider their position.

US Gear installed

I had the US gear OD installed last week. Really like it. It makes my 4. 11 rearend a whole lot more driveable. The cost of the unit was $2595. The labor was $475. The driveline mod from the transfer case to the front was $100. Freight and tax brought the total to $3484. The clearance issue is pretty simple. You need to have at least 18" between the back of the transfer case to the front of the fuel tank. I am still learning but the best way to split shift(ie 5th over to 6 direct) the OD is to activate the OD switch prior to shifting the trans. It is important to have the driveline powered (either decelerating or accellerating) when the switch is activated. Wait 2 seconds then shift the trans up or down as normal. Shifting the OD within the same gear is much the same. Activate the switch, wait 2 seconds, release the accelerator while tapping the clutch about half way. If the driveline is not pretty well loaded, the unit will shift instantly causing a loud clunk which scares the @# out of you. The unit seems to be a lot smoother when pulling a load. If you do not pull, I might think about the GV unit. I have tried shifting without the clutch and do not recommend it.

As far as putting the unit behind the transfer case, I'm not sure why that would be preferable.

Gear vendors;

works the best with an auto transmission as a overdrive or as a second overdrive

Good customer service they will talk to you on the phone and act like they give a rats *** about you

oil gets dark very quickly and yes it is clutch material

the good news is there is a lot of clutch material the bad news is changing the oil and cleaning the filters is needlessly a pain in the arse and you had better not try to skip a change

regular oil change will get you 100,000++ miles

after a while you are not so paranoid

probably better for racing applications or as daily driver instead of dedicated heavy tower

smooth shifts easy to use

US Gear;

best with manual transmission

customer service, not really, you might get lucky

very strong well built unit and easy to work on, a 2 speed manual trans

normal manual transmission service interval

heavy hauling no problem

smooth shifts once you learn how (helps if you ever drove a 2 speed rear end)

with auto transmission you have to shift to neutral to get a smooth shift

overdrive in 4wheel drive is absolutely bad *** and works great... most people do not have a need for this

I own both gv on 02 dodge... us gear on 86 k30

With either unit care and common sense must be used gauges are a must you have no idea how hot you can get your turbo on a slight grade in double od especially if you are modded for fuel or timing

yes, I burned up a turbo

this information is from owning both units and lots of research on this website see 2nd gen eng and trans and general engine and trans
