Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) P ECU displayed on odometer

Recently I started my truck on a cool morning without allowing the heaters to run. It started right up, did not sound the best, and the odometer display said: P ECU.



After a few moments, the display returned to normal.



What did that mean?

Cycle the key on-off 3 times, third time leave it on and see if there are any codes... .

Is that procedure in the repair manual (3x cycling ignition)? (I've read it cover to cover, but don't remember that) I was recently considering purchasing a generic code scanner. I've never been to the dealer, but wondered if I could get DTC's off the truck somehow. Thanks.

Don't know if it's in the manual, works on 2001 trucks and up...
