My truck was making a funny noise so I pulled the rear wheels off and discovered the Rt parking brake shoes were worn in one particular spot and that was making the noise. I adjusted the right one down a bit so it wouldn't make noise. I bought shoes, not cheap, and after several months I finally got around to changing them, only to discover that the backing plate was damaged as well. Dodge only sells it as a kit which includes the backing plate, shield, shoes and all the hardware. Fortunately it comes assembled. Unfortunately they recommend you change both sides as it is a change up from the original. The Dodge P/N is 52010141AC. Great now I have 2 sets of new shoes. I bought them a while ago and can't take them back, especially since I did the left side first. ARGH!

I put the truck back together and ordered the parts. I admit I haven't really studied the truck again now that I have seen the new assembly, as I have been too busy, so my question is: Do I have to take the hub and axle off to change this? Has anyone done this already? What all is involved? I have done Dana 60 and 70 rear ends before but never an AAM.

This is a lot like a change out of the backing plate/shoe assembly on a trailer axle... its a very straight forward process. . I used to own a HD Friction shop... we used to reline these shoes and other parking brake shoes for lot of light to mid range trucks... .

To be honest I've never seen a backing plate that couldn't be repaired... but there has to be a reason that they are selling the complete assembly... I also had a small fleet of these trucks... other than changing the shoes, we had no other problems with the backing plates or other related parts... .

you will have to pull the tire, caliper, rotor, from the axle housing before you can remove and replace the backing plate...
