2002 Dodge Ram 3500. EDM injectors stage 2, Edge Comp box, PDR HX 40, Scotty 2, 4" exhaust. PRYO, Boost, and FP gauges, Bombed transmission.

Hey guys was out in my truck last night with the EDM's and all and I can't seem to get my boost to work as you guys said a 40 would. If I get on it the boost climbs to 30 quick and if Im really in it A LONG time then I can get it to top out at 36 so I think I need to adjust the wastegate to 40 psi. I would ask piers how but the time zone screws us up. I also thought that the 40 would just zip right up there when you got into it mine if its at say 8 psi and I get on it, the thing will charge to 30 and sit there till it hits OD then I gotta back outta it cause my EGT's are approacing 1500 degreese pre turbo. Is this normal? Im afraid to keep my foot into it! Cruising EGT is about 600 but if I get into it with my EDM stage 2's and my comp on 4 or 5 my egt's soar to 1400 in like 3 seconds, then I back out of it because Im afraid they will keep going. The most boost I have seen yet is 36 PSI with the 40 Im hoping and adjustment will cure my problem. By the way what EGT can I run before it will burn down?

I have the same turbo and I see 36-38 psi max. I have seen 40 once or twice. I would leave the wastegate set where Piers set it. The HX 40 isn't the highest boost making turbo. Boost is fine at 36. As you have found out, above 36PSI, you will generate heat. .

Jamie,

Greg is correct.

After about 36 your blowin hot air from the 40.

And at that point the wastegate starts kickin in.

If you are wanting more boost out of your Piers 40, I would suggest installing a restrictive brass elbow to delay/retard your wastegate from opening.

This modification should yield you the 40psi which you are seeking!

Well right now if I get on it the turbo only seems to go to about 25 psi if Im in it about mid throttly my old 35 used to pull about 35 at the same point is it normal for the 40 to see less boost?

Leave it alone!

I would sugguest you leave it alone. The HX-40 wastegated turbo from Piers are pre-set between 40-42PSI max. The fact you went to a larger turbo, from an HX-35 to a HX-40, it will take more power to achieve 40 psi of boost. The shaft on the HX-40 is the same as the HX-35, which is the weak link in the turbos. To properly adjust the turbo wategate opening, it will require it to be removed, pre-set line air line pressure to the actuator, and say have it start to open at around 35psi at which time 40 psi it will be fully opened. The idea is not to have it open at 40 but be fully open by 40 psi. You need to have some experience in doing this. Improperly, set wastegate opening of a turbo, can result in an over boost condition, which will cause turbo failure.

Jamie. . more fuel = more boost... but then you chase the egt dragon again... that 1500 you see is only for a short time till the turbo catches it... you still might see 1400 or so at all out max

Drag Comp. . 5x5 I see 41 / 42 lbs. @ 1400 WOT

with it off I se about 36 /38 lbs. with DDIII's and HX40 with 4" pipe @ 1250 to 1300 WOT

I don't bother to watch it unlass it's WOT just occasional glances normal running

Procedure as explained to me

Jamie,

You can see, from my signature, that we are equipped nearly the same. When I recently got my PDR-HX40 my top boost would only go to 32 PSI and over 1500*. I called and discussed this with Piers. He He told me that the HX-40 will acquire 38 PSI efficiently. To raise my pressure I was instructed to :

1) remove clip from wastegate actuator. (I achieved this with a small screwdriver from underneath)

2) apply pressure to wastegate ( I removed hose from turbo charger then used a bicycle pump to apply pressure. )

3)when tension was released the actuator arm, came off.

4) as instructed I screwed the actuator arm in (clockwise) 4 complete turns.

5) reverse procedure to reinstall.

This is all easier than it sounds. It took me and a helper (to work the pump) less than 20 minutes to accomplish).

After doing this my pressures went up to 39 or 40# on 5X5. My EGT's are 1300* to 1350*on the same setting. If in doubt take time from your busy day to give Piers a call. He's very informative.

Mine seems to be well now all of a sudden it started spooling like crazy maybe it just needed to break in I can now pull 40 PSI at WOT easily in OD in all other gears about 28-32 PSi depending on the load on the engine does that sound right? I can now safely hold it on and pull about 1300 degreese. I have noticed about 6-8 psi in cruise on a small grade about 4 on the flat @ 100 km/h. Seems alright now mabe a little TLC was all it needed!
