I finally got the truck running today and wanted to say I have the new Piers HX-40 turbo on my truck and even though I have been easy on her so far I really like the way it works. After a few more miles of breakin her in I will let you know how the turbo works with lotsa fuel poored to it.

I have the 18 housing on it right now and the lag aint as bad as many said it was gonna be. I have the modified 16 housing sitting here to go on after a little more time with the 18. If the 16 will spool better than this 18, it will be a winner for me.

Thumbs up for this turbo. Thanks Piers.

As much as I hate the hx 40 for its failure rate, I think Piers's version might be in my truck's future. I like the heavy-duty idea behind the b1, but it might be unrealistic to think it will work well with a tight torque converter at high altitude. Drivability is more important than reliability. If I get the B1 and it has a lot of lag, I am not going to like it, and who wants something to last forever when it has such a major flaw like that. Piers might have to send one my way in a few months if these hold up better than the rest of the hx- 40s have.

Hey Piers- what would you do for a turbo in my situation? I hate lag, and I am shooting for 400 hp at the rear wheels at this altitude. I also need low egts for towing. Kurt's B1 would be good for the towing bit, but I think it will kill the drivability in town with lag, lag and more lag.

just guessin here

CAnderson I bet there might be a demo SuperHX40&reg to try out

Piers won't stick ya for something that's not just right

Pier & Holset = :D :D :D

Canderson,

I will have my HX-40 16 housing on in the next few weeks and I will tow my trailer around and give ya some kinda opinion.

My trailer is only about 7000lbs though. Better than nothin I guess.

Man, I would love to try. I just dont like the thought of driving about 10 hours and driving back home right away. I have been trying to figure a way to pull it off. My poor ol truck is so lame you guys would prolly just laugh at it anyway;)

I think the ideal turbo doesn't exist. I don't want to spend weeks cleaning the trubo guts out of everything because it blew up though. I will probably just stick with the hx35 and be happy with it. Whatever eh?

Oh no Don is pulling the weak truck thing!!! As soon as some starts this you know there is power pouring out the tail pipes. My poor old truck:confused:  Sickly:confused:

Don you've been talking too much with Donnelly:cool:

10 hours? I can make it from Omaha, NE to Ennis, Tx in about 10 1/2 hours... ... the trip to KC would be shorter I would imagine? If you can come that would be great... ... I'm going with Kurt's B1 but still would like to see your Piers HX40 in action. Also "might" try Kurt's KwikSpool II with some "other" mods to see if I can tear that one up.

My trucks getting a new injection pump right now, and if Kurt's B1 gets here soon I'll have it on to dyno with the 27th.

Kat, Aren't You worried about the "Lag, Lag And More Lag"   ;)

I hate to throw parts at trucks hoping the problem is what you think it is. I have found lately that sometimes little things can seem like something else. I can site several examples of things here, but wont bore you with them. I can tell ya for me it always turns out to be the simple little things that go wrong and throw me for a loop.

I hope your troubles are solved with a pump.

I could not get enough info for the B-1 turbo to make a decision on it.

I know the HX-40's work well and if set-up right will last a good long time. Big wheels and shafts add to more lag. Small housings add to restrictive exhaust flow. The HX-40 does not have a big shaft to slow the spool up down nor a real large exhaust wheel. Both of these help to spool the turbo faster and make less work for the engine. Of course this adds to the overall power output.

OTOH, the smaller shafts are not as stong... I have not tried the 16 housing on my truck yet. Piers has modified the housing to make it spool faster. Im running the 18 housing and the lag is there, but not too bad.

Your auto truck would prolly work well with a HX-40/16 modified by Piers and your top HP level would increase.

Finally, big turbos that pack in more air at higher boost levels need larger exhaust housings to get the extra air you just packed in back out. You can fill your cylinders with all the cool air you want, but to make the engine the most overall power you have to scavenge and remove the combustion gases as well. Small housings wont cut it. Low end power may be increased with small housings, but your top end power goes down. The 12cm 40 housing has the tiny little 1. 5 cross sectional area. To borrow a line, most people would laugh at trying to get 500HP with an exhaust pipe of that diameter.

You may have lowered your 1/4 miles times with the smaller 12cm housing because most of the race is won or lost on the first part of the 1/4 mile. Acceleration in the low end helped your 60 foot time and hurt your top end at the end.
