Fuel line Bomb to change fuel pressure

Four Wheeler magazine

Just installed Piers HX-50 hybrid"NEW" turbo and the following , is my observations and testing so far:

1. The turbo is a HX-50 , with extreme heavy duty bearings and zero balanced. The exhaust housing is a 15. 8 cm , "schwitzer" made by Borgwarner machined to fit the back of the HX-50, and has the same exhaust flange as a HX-40 and will couple with the HX-40 down pipe. ( the exception to this is a six-speed HO, which a two inch sleeve will be needed to extend the down pipe behind the flange, in order for it to clear the frame and transmission. ) The pin wheel and shaft are much larger than the HX-40, and can easily handle the 50-55 psi of boost. The turbo is not wastegated.

2. Turbo lag... The best way to describe this is, if you can now spool-up a HX-40, you should have no problem in running this turbo. :D In normal driving, you will not notice any difference over an HX-40. However, after saying this, there is a slight lag around the 18-2000 RPM range when you try to nail it while cruising down the road, or trying to accelerate on an incline, say in 6th gear. Once you hit 21-2200 RPM the turbo spools real "hard" like a B-1, or H2e, and red lines fast! Oo. The bottom end is like the HX-40 and the top end is like the bigger turbos. Only a slight loss , and I mean "slight" loss of mid-range as compared to the HX-40. Most people won't notice the difference, and at lower elevations, may not even be there?( I forgot to tell you I'm testing at 5700') .

3. Egt's... There is an increase of Egt's, approx. 75-100*. When you accellerate the Egt's climb fast, however, I have not pushed truck hard enough yet to determine if Egt's stabilize within safe limits at WOT.

In summary this turbo, is for those seeking better performance out of a single turbo, to be used for competition, and everyday driver with "road rage". I would not recommend this turbo for heavy towing , because of the Egt issues. In addition, I would insure, your truck is properly sized in injectors, fueling box, exhaust system etc. before stepping up to this turbo. IMHO, this turbo will out perform the B-1 bomber, and H2e. You will not be disappointed. I understand, a 17cm exhaust housing & blow-off/wastegate system is in the works which may eliminate some issues.

I would also recommend, upgrading your inter-cooler hoses and clamps, which Piers has put together, a package to insure no problems with the increased boost pressures you will be running with this turbo.

Thanks for the info! :D Now I want one real bad! :{ :{ :{ Look forward to meeting you at the Ida Hoe 2 day bomb party... . :D

Mark you are the dog!!

Mark... your'e right! Its been awhile- eh ? . I guess I can put the Viagra away for awhile and just drive my truck. :D eh?

P. S. As you know I am not affiliated with Piers Diesel Research and am assuming all risks in this turbo test and accessories. ( including the woody's that may come with the test).

No matter what others say, you Canucks are "OK" in my book.

So is it the slight lag that causes the cursing?;)

KKaiser. . good one ! So much for spell check? I was trying to spell "cruising" not cursing. Its not that bad at all to be cursing, more like coasting... :p

Man I just drooled all over my key board and got quite a shock:rolleyes:

I can't wait to get mine. This is going to be a great summer... .

Thanks Steve, that was just what I want to know.

You guys are going to have to quit getting cooler and cooler stuff out all the time. Our dreams can't even keep up, much less my wallet!LOL

Good info Steve. I was thinking of trying one of those hybreds, but if the lag is about the same as a Hx40 16cm think I'm going for something different. I really like to loose some of the lag with what I have, it's a bit annoying in the heat of summer, not to mention the smoke issue with the 5's when you add lag. I know the answer is twins, just not sure if I want to loose the lag enough to spend the $$$ for them and a o-ringed head right now. I'm leaning towards one of Piers cams and a o-ring job for now.

Drive pressures must be a bit high. That would be cured with the bigger exhaust housing.

Drive pressures are great with this turbo, that's from the horses mouth, and no I won't post numbers. Piers is working on another idea so give him a week or two to test it. Looks like this turbo is going to go places, especially if it works at 5700 ft.

Not to pick nits, but it's probably a Schwitzer, now KKK-Schwitzer.

Then what is causing the high EGT's? Too much fuel?

RustyJ. . Thanks, I can't spell very well. Its a "schwitzer" exhaust housing made by Borg Warner.

Greg... I think you are right! With the Large turbo, in order for it to spool good a smaller exhaust housing gets it going. Once this bad boy spools, at my altitude you can't hear the turbo, just this "hugh sucking noise" like your'e air box is being sucked into the turbo. :D At lower elevations, this Egt problem will be much lower. I'm talking only 75-100* at 5700'. A larger exhaust housing will solve this problem, however, we hi-landers need this smaller housing. Piers is working on a little larger housing and I don't know if at my elevation, it would work as well. I'm real happy with this turbo, as it out performs the HX-40 for my power level. Remmember it will only get better when I drive down to you smog filled flat landers.

Dee... You won't be disappointed.
