Im not new to diesels. i have a 4bt in my toyota rock crawler that im building...

Looking at a 2007 3500 dually with a 6 spd. 192k miles. Its owned by an older guy who I work for sometimes. He got a deal on it about 10k miles ago. Its not super clean, which doesn't bother me. 100% stock. Its a towing/work truck. Few dents and scratches. Could use a clutch in the near future. Its had a couple issues since he bought it but I need to work these out if I want to own it. My main concern is how it sounds. Difficult to describe it other than it sounds like rod knock. At the same time it runs smoothly if you couldn't hear it. Nothing funny at any particular rpms. No vibration. He says a shop told him that what it sounds like in reduced power mode, which is what the display says when you start it up. He also said its in Reduced power mode because of an emissions issue. Im going to scan it tomorrow and see what codes its throwing but he says its the DPF or the EGR cooler. Would these cause it to go into reduced power mode?

If I buy it I will rip out the stupid smog stuff and put a chip in it but for now I need it to smog. So how big of an issue am I looking at to get rid of the check engine light? I realize its impossible to guess whats wrong with it from the info I provided. Its sounded the same for the last 6 months, so that kinda makes me think its not rod knock. But I guess its possible.

Give me some things to check tomorrow when I have it for a few hours so I can make a more educated guess at whats wrong.

If there are any extremely helpfull knowledgeable 6. 7 owners out there I would love to send you a vid of it running and you can help diagnose the sound.

Thanks.

A Hilux with a 4bt, now theres a man with some taste! I had an 89 with a straight axle and a F. I. 2. 8 out of a late 1st gen 280z... unfortanately I totaled the truck and ended up trading the running gear for a tilt trailer... .

Welcome to TDR, I'm not familiar with the new stuff but surely there are those on here that are, just hang in there for a bit.

Thanks. Its an 84 with a diesel title in Cali so I figured Id make it go fast. Dana 60s, Ford ZF5, Four link rear, three link front, 40 inch tires on the way. Its a work in progress. p pump 4bt too.

I would Pull the codes and go from there . if it has a CEL that will make it run in limp mode. why hasn't he fixed it ? makes ya wonder if he know's it's something bad ?

Hes an old guy who has 3 trucks and he putts around town towing his AVS skid steer or mini x with it. I dont think he has ever been above 2000 rpms and he says it pulls better than his 7. 3 even in limp mode. If I didn't know him I would be sure he was full of it, but I know he paid a shop in Idaho a bunch of money to test the injectors and stuff... I trust him not lying, I just don't trust what he knows. haha.

By the way how do you like your jetta? I bought my wife a 2012 golf tdi. 30k miles and no problems. Been a mpg hero so far.

2007 was the first year for the egr and other emissions stuff, and EPA is now getting very serious about trucks back to that model year. Removing the stuff could be a major problem for you in the future. With the mileage and hard use of the truck, I wouldn't consider it unless it is real cheap and you are willing to chase problems with money--egr cleaning, new injectors, re-flashing the computer if new flashes are available, etc. The dual mass flywheel is almost certanly toast, and the clutch not far behind it. The G56 transmission is known to give major problems with hard use even before that mileage, and parts for it are costly.

Update!
I have the truck this evening and im checking things out. When you start the truck it says "exhuast filter full" Reduced power mode.
I have access to some good DPFs from the same year. When those are installed will it sense the problem solved? I imagine the EGR cooler and such needs cleaned aswell.
Climbing underneath there are two lines, air lines im guessing, that thread into exhuast bungs. One between the two filters and one right after. Both those lines are unhooked.
There are also three plug in connectors on the outside of the passanger side frame rail. Are these accessories that I don't have, or are they sensors in the exhuast I didn't see?
Thanks for the help!

Sound's like somebody either did a Poor Job of Deletes or did the Job Half way I would say hook everything back up and run it see what happen's . they run just Fine Stock .
