I am trying to do my first timing for a budy. I had problems at first finding TDC and I think we screwed up on a couple of steps the first couple of times we tried to adjust the timing. I thought we eventually corrected our problems and got the timing set where we wanted it but I am not sure. TDC is correct because I took the washer an o-ring off of the timing pin and lubed it and it went into the cam just fine when I barred the motor over. I then removed the timing pin. After that I removed the delivery valve and all its components and set the dial indicator to 8. 00mm. We barred the motor over so that the crank was going counterclockwise until the indicator stopped dropping. The reading we got was 1. 82mm(what do I do with this number?). I then reset the indicator back to 0. 00mm and barred the engine clockwise back to TDC and get a reading of 6. 23mm. Now does this mean my timing is 6. 23mm=17. 7*. I thought everything was fine and I put everything back togeter. :) Truck won't start:eek: I cracked a injection line but no fuel came out while cranking. Could the pump need bled or something. What kind of timing does it look like I'm at? I wouldn't feel so bad if this was my truck but it's someone else's and they now haven't had it for a couple of days. I will start from scratch if someone could just point me in that direction and tell me what I need to do. Thanks Matt

got'em

i have the timing chart and a Haynes manual already but there are things like in my post where I said I get 1. 82mm that the manual tells me to make note of that number but never again says what to use it fore. Matt

Since you didn't loosen the gear on the pump the timing is what it was before you began. The no start problem sounds like a fuel bleeding problem or the shut off solenoid not opening. The 1. 82 is what is left of the 8 you started with after it backed down 6. 23. When you reset to 0. 00 and went clockwise to TDC you got the 6. 23, which you have to convert to degrees with the chart. You didn't say which CPL the engine was so I can't say what the timing is.

Did you remember to plug your 3 wire fuel solenoid plug back together. If the solenoid doesn't actuate then the run lever on the pump will stay in the off position. When the solenoid is energized, it pulls a lever on the pump into the run position.

got it

I bled the pump and that was the problem. Where the truck use to get to about 1400degrees it now only runs about 1200. Now if it picks up 1-2mpg that will be great. Thanks for the help. Matt
