I had my truck into the shop today for it's second front transfer case seal today. Talking to the tech. , he told me there is a orange wire in the cab, which when grounded, will raise your idle to 1100 rpm's. He said this is for running your PTO. Can anybody out there verify this. He wasn't sure of the color combination or location. My truck is a '99.

I am interested in this just for a simple high idle controller. Any input would be appreciated.

Dan

On my 97 2500 gaser, there was an orange wire in the engine compartment that had a label "PTO" on it. I am not sure if this is the same wire or not.

The wiring diagram in the service manual shows this wire. I do not know if it works or not.

I just checked and the wire is in the engine compartment. Top of firewall in the middle under the rubber seal for the hood.

Anyone confirm this yet and able to make it work?

12V, 24V ??? HD transfer case or not??

I asked my dealer just after I bought the truck and they sent me to the local dump body dealer who had a 'solution' (for big $).
I've never understood why there was not a simple solution in the OEM harness.

The orange wire is there on my model year 2000—pin 2 on both male and female halves of connector 125.

Who will do the smoke test???

If I get a chance this weekend I'll run through the wiring diagrams and then see if I can give it a try.

For those that have seen the wire, where does this wire run from and to, a couple guys have seen it in the engine compartment and over the center of the truck under the seal, does it go into the cab or ? I may be willing to ground it out this weekend but would like to know exactly where to find it and where it goes, maybe it runs down to the 4WD selecter area?

C125 and C126 are near center of firewall about 5 inches below cowl seal—and all of the wiring that runs under cowl seal. C125 is the smaller of the two connectors. Pin #2 is in one of the four corners of the connector and both halves of C125 have an orange wire at the pin #2 position. All of the above agrees with my 2000 shop manual.

The shop manual indicates that one of the orange wires goes to pin 26 of the ECM.

The other orange wire from this connector is shown going to a "PTO sense switch", whatever that is.

This wire shouldn't have anything to do with the PTO directly... it should simply provide some type of input signal to the ECM to produce a high engine idle.

Again from the service manual—this time from section 14 (Fuel System).

"PTO SWITCH SENSE—ECM INPUT OPERATION

This Engine Control Module (ECM) input is used only on models equipped with aftermarket Power Take Off (PTO) units.
The input is used to tell the ECM that the PTO has been engaged. When engaged, the ECM will disable certain OBD II functions uyntil the PTO has been turned off. "

Maybe the orange wire has nothing to do with engine speed.

well checked under the hood and sure enough I found one orange wire with PTO as big as the sun at the end of it, so now the question is, is it looking for ground or +12v? I sure hope someone can come back with some more info on this, it would sure be cool to just have to install a toggle switch.

This subject came up about a year ago and got nowhere with this orange wire. I think the out come was it is just a wire to suppply power for PTO equipment.

I checked at the training center and discussed this with an instructor, he dug into it a bit and found out when grounded it disables some diagnostic monitoring. I tried it and no rpm change, this is normal. It is not meant for idle change. I got a switch from practical diesel solutions that works great.

if someone can please verify this, I am also most interested a 3. 00 switch is a heck of a lot better than the 200 dollar unit I was looking at.

Looking for the easy solution for this fast idle? We can thank DC for deleting the second 50 pin connector on the Cummins ECM. The 'pin' you are all looking for to kick up the idle was on that other connector... .

(along with a bunch of nice features)

Search the archives, this was all discussed about a year ago.

Well I was at my friendly dealer today talking with my very knowledgable diesel tech and he did not know but was also curious so he pulled out the book and we found that some type of switch does go there but not very clear as to the grounding vs. 12V thing, he is going to call his buddy at STAR and see if they can track this down, because he also had heard that this was indeed possible but it is more than one connection.

I am still wondering if we could not utilize a two - 50 pin ECM, would the engine and drivetrain still not be on the connector that is already there? Wouldn't adding the second 50 pin just give us the access to the other features? I just cannot see why it could not be done.

Nacho, Can you enlighten me about your purchase from Practical Diesel Solutions? I would like to know how you went about increasing the engine rpm with thier product. Installation/cost, etc. Thanks! Dave
