I just put on a Mag-Hytec cover on the rear and after driving about 30 miles I get back to the house and I am checking for leaks, etc. So I put my hand on the cover to feel how hot it is and it is quite warm. I can keep my hand on it, but after about 10 seconds its very uncomfortable. I filled it with Amsoil 75-140 gear lube to the higher of the two marks on the dipstick, which according to the directions puts it at the bottom of the axle inside the tube.

I forgot to check on the oem cover for a temperature to compare with after the change so I can't compare now without going back.



Can someone tell me if what I felt is "normal" or is it too hot?

It's normal. I have the Mag Hytec too and originally had the same concern. There was discussion on this same subject last year and everyone said they were too hot to hold your hand on for any length of time.

whew!! I thought I did something wrong. Well, I kind of did anyway - I used some non-hardening gasket maker and forgot it might desolve on the inside as the hot lube bathes it. Sooo!!I 'm getting ready to drain it and clean it to put some proper RTV on it now. I'll let it cure overnight and refill it tomorrow.

My Mag Hytec cover is o-ringed. I haven't installed it yet, waiting for the next rear end oil change. Why are you using the rtv? Unless yours isn't o-ringed?

The o-ring is fine and dandy for many applications, looks cool too. But the surface on the diff isn't designed for an o-ring, it's designed for a paper gasket. You have to do a whole bunch of smoothing, messin, and goopin if you want the o-ring to seal. Just put a stock gasket on it and forget the o-ring.



The magnetic dipstick makes it all worth it.
 
Oh! My gauge usually shows from 150F up to 200F in the Dana 70. The Nv4500 runs 150-220F. The USGear OD runs 200 and up to as high as you want to make it go.



I think you can't hold your hand on anything over 120F. Sounds pretty normal to me.

I hd to put rtv on it because I have some letters stamped into the housing where the o-ring goes that would let it leak, and also because when my housing was drilled out it wasn't perfectly centered and so the distance from a couple of the bolt holes to the inside edge is so close that the o-ring is off the edge and again would let the lube leak out. It mentions in the directions that came with the cover to check all this out. So I had to rtv it or

like Larry said put a gasket on it. I went with the rtv because I had it handy. The gasket would be easier for sure.
