Well here we go again. After replacing the rear main seal with sleeve from Cummings I still have an oil leak. I have taken it to a mechanic to let them have a try. When I installed the new seal with sleeve I used Permatex

High strength sleeve retainer with the Permatex surface prep. I bought the install tool from 4X4 Tech Inc. in Montana and went forward thinking that I did a good job.

I'm beginning to think that it has something to do with the seal retainer which means the Bell housing has to come off. Somehow this ties into the pan and I believe an oil leak can develop from the pan seal into the crank area.

Has anyone had experience with this problem and if so how did you fix it.

I need some ammunition to show the mechanic. Hes thinking thats not the problem. I'm not so sure.

Thanks

Mike

Anyone have a similar experience?Has anybody had to take the rear main seal

retainer off?

Can you develop a leak in the Flywheel Housing that looks like its coming from the rear seal but is actually coming from a leak where the pan gasket ties into the rear main seal retainer. Is this even possible?

Thanks

Mike

I replaced the rear main seal 4 times (the first being by the dealer) in my 1990 CTD which I bought new.

The 3rd time I removed the seal retainer so that I could use a press to squarely install the seal. I neatly cut & removed the gasket between the retainer and oil pan and then cleaned thourghly.

Removing the gasket between the pan and retainer allowed the seal to align itself to the crankshaft I then carefully tightened the screws holding the retainer in place.

I then loosened a couple of the oil pan screws to allow me to slide the gasket back in place.

Using silicone I then slid the cut out gasket back in place making sure silicone filled all voids and then tightened all screws.

It is very important that the seal surfaces are oil free otherwise the seal will leak.

The seal is made of Teflon and requires a clean oil free surface for the seal to mate to the crankshaft sealing surface.

Properly installed Teflon from the seal is transferred onto the crank sealing surface.

Anything is possible!

Thanks for the reply TBartlett1 . When you say you cut the gasket, was that the pan gasket or is there a separate gasket for the seal retainer? Were all of your leaks from the rear main seal or could they have been from the pan gasket or somewhere else?Do you still have that truck?

Thanks

Mike
