Hi, just wondering, I pulled the transmission out of my 2005 3500 for a rebuild. The rear main doesn't appear to be leaking, just a slight dampness around it. Truck has 150,000 miles on it, do I change seal or leave well enough alone?

Mine looked like this when I did my clutch a couple of weeks ago.

I obviously replaced mine when the clutch was out. At 150K, I'd replace it if you have concerns about it.

Change it.

I would definitely change it since you are obviously going with a new clutch too, right?

Its an Automatic. I will probly just go ahead and change it, if I remember correctly, it wasn't that tough when I did on my 98.

Leave it alone unless it looks like Mr. Gillot’s. ALWAYS go by the old adage “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

I still would replace as insurance. I, personally, would kick myself if 10k down the road it started to leak. For the price of a seal, I wouldn't risk it. I don't know about you, but pulling transmission and transfer case are not high on my list of favorites to do.....and I have a shop lift.

Yup, Shiner, I ordered one today, be a few weeks before transmission is back, so there's no excuse for not doing it. I did mine on floor, one of the race cars is tying up the hoist, priorities, you know.

LOL! Oh, I know that all to well. I don't know how many times I have had to do stuff in the driveway, or on the floor, cause the lift is tied up with other projects.

Do you guys replacing the seal find a groove where the old seal was that may require a speedy sleeve ?.

Dave

I did mine at 240K and no hint of a groove yet, just the nick inflicted by cold fumble fingers:(. If you find a groove, use the sleeve.
