I just recently purchased a slide in Truck Camper that overhangs the rear end by about 18". While looking at some chatter on RV.net a Ford owner mentioned he was able to relocate the spare tire hoist socket as his camper blocked access to the socket:eek: So before I have a flat and have to remove the camper to lower the spare tire, has anybody moved this critter to the wheel well area?

I have an 03 1ton dully with a 4' overhang Lance slide in, I just pack a 1/2" by 12" socket extension in the camper. Since I carry tools there is always a 1/2" drive ratchet in the truck. It works great!!

We have several trucks with flat beds on them... . we've extended the opening to outside the flat bed and made a custom wrench in the truck to lower the tire... like the wrench used to lower the landing gear on the back of a 5er... . we tuck it in the tool box and we've been happy... .

All our trucks run 19. 5" with a stock spare... in the past several years I can't remember a time when we've had to use the spare but once a year they are dropped down, checked for pressure the hoist is lubricated so that when there's 6" of packed snow back there, it will work... . hopefully... .

I have a '96 3500 and I rotated the lift asm 90 deg so the lift rod comes out behind the passenger wheels. There was a hole in the frame that the lift rod lined up with.

I tried to re-orient my spare tire hoist assembly but was concerned that it would make contact with frame. I put it back. For my truck, the shoulder on the hoist drive rod, underneath the truck where the drive rod penetrates the bumpr, is a hexagonal shape and fits a wrench nicely. It is a lot slower than using the speed handle to lower the spare, but I don't have to take the camper off.

I also used a 1/2" extension, ratchet and a socket to lower the spare while my (then) 11' 3" lance camper was on the bed.
