I am trying to remove the backup light switch off the transmission. I made a tool to remove it, but could not get it out.

The seals are leaking, and forth gear does not appear to engauge fully. So I am considering removing the transmission (get 360). So will it seperate from the bell housing, or will it be a major pain.

any tricks to getting it out. what tool do you use to remove the backup lamp switch???

remove getrag

Yes it seperates from the bell housing. Are you twd or fwd? With the rear support out the engine will need support under the rear of the oil pan. Let everything drop down a bit and the transmission will slide back. (When you remove the four bolts). Don't press the clutch and it will go back in the same way. You may want all that out anyway to service the pilot bearing and clutch release bearing and inspect the clutch.

Are you saying that the wire won't come off or the switch won't come out? You don't have to take the switch out.

It is just nuts and bolts. Nothing major pain. It is heavy. There are some pictures in the archives of a truck that was modified to have the floor pan come out. Nice if you are hard on the transmission and work on it a lot. You could probably put a rear seal without removing the transmission. Bearings may be loose and killing the seal so you are probably right to get the transmission out and inspect everything.

If fourth didn't engage completely it would most likely jump out. If it doesn't jump out, my guess is it IS going far enough.

getrag removal

The truck is a 2wd, still can't get that profile to work. .

I traced the backup light problem to the switch mounted on the transmission. but the switch butts up against a metal casting so you cannot get the socket on it. so I cut an old socket, but that did not work. .

The new part is a 15/16, now maybe the part that is in there is metric, would you know???

I have seen the mods where the floor pan has been cut so the transmission top can be removed. Not sure why, but don't feel like destroying... cutting the floor pan.

I can get the heavy stuff out, its getting it back in thats the truoble. But glad to here she will just slide out.

Ya would you know why forth does not go in fully, is that a bent fork, or a bigger problem. Thats my main motivation for removing the transmission, i know its going to cause problems down the road.

Trag

I have a transmission on my bench at home and will check the size of the switch body when I am back there. Will PM.

My 70 Ford had a removable floor pan and I utilized that feature several times in the twenty years I drove it.

I checked my 93 manual transmission and I can tell you that the fourth shift is not as 'deep' as second. I am sure nothing is wrong with mine. If you feel the detents on the shift rail and it doesn't ever try to jump gear, then I don't think you have a problem. The fork is aluminum and could be bent but it would take a serious impact to do that.

I am going to post on checking the getrag. I thought I had but may have always done it in a PM.

The old switch is a 24mm-15/16" too close to tell any difference on a 6pt nut. Mine has quit working, and I'm sure I could get a Vice Grips up there to take it out, but dont want to risk getting it half out and then breaking something. I'll agree it is a MAJOR PITA, how close they have the switch to the housing casting overhang doo-hickie. Cant get a socket on it, wrench sont fit on there, either, with the floorpan being in the way.

Reinstall

IF, like the last time I had my transmission out, you cant get the throwout bearing, clutch splines, and transmission input shaft to all line up, you can put the bellhousing on the transmission, install the T. O. bearing, and put it onto the engine that way, like many smaller trannies have to do with the integral bellhousing. Easier to line up the input shaft and clutch w/o the T. O. bearing fouling things up.
