I've got a 2000 CTD auto that I just love. I've had it a couple years and have pulled trailers, campers, etc... with no complaints. Recently I had some major power issues. At random speeds with no load I would have sudden power losses and what seemed to feel like running in overdrive when I should have been in 2nd. I took it to a local mechanic who thought I needed a TSB, he printed it out and everything. I took it to a dealership (who by the way replaced my lift pump about 2 months ago under warranty) who said that TSB didn't apply to my truck and transmission. So, I put out the $80 for them to diagnose the problem. Later that day I got a call that my MAP & throttle position sensor needed replaced and govenor sensor and solenoid needed replaced. I perform minor maintenance and such on the truck (oil, trans fluid, fuel filter, diff change, etc... ) but didn't know anything about these sensors. Also, due to work and such no time to spend trial and error on my own. So I told them to go ahead on the work. They replaced the above parts & reprogrammed the ECM/PCM. Total cost was $1270, with dealership saying none of those parts were covered by cummins warranty (truck has 82K miles). My question, should any of those parts have been covered by warranty? If so, how do I go about getting the proof to refute the dealership and get some money back? Any thoughts are appreciated.

In a previous life I worked for a used car dealer and had almost the same parts replaced. It was almost funny because I sent it to a dealer and was told no warranty. A day on the phone and found a "REAL" dealer and it was fixed under warranty no problem. They make more money with you paying than if DC pays. You just put an extra couple hundred in that dealers pockets. SORRY!!

It is highly unlikely that all of those components would fail at the same time. Possible, but highly unlikely. More likely, but more difficult to diagnose is a wiring system fault. Say, a ground that feeds two sensors or an ECM ground. You might quiz them as to the probability of multiple sensor/component failures.

100,000 or 5 years on engine. The engine is bought through cummins from DC as a stand alone, meaning it can run on it's own from cummins without DC haveing to stick a bunch of parts into it, The engine can not run without the parts you just described.

Call customer service at DC to compain, the phone number is in the back of your owners manual.

Ben:

I had the APPS (accelerator pedal position sensor) (called TPS or throttle position sensor on 12 valve engines) replaced under warranty on my truck a couple months ago with about 80k on the odometer.

I had tried previously and was told that STAR wouldn't approve replacement under warranty. I returned to the same dealer after communicating with another TDR member who had been successful in having his replaced under warranty for the same problem. This time the dealer had a sharp new service manager. He grabbed the warranty books, flipped through the pages and told me he'd take care of it.

#@$%! lousy dealer. All those engine components are covered under the warranty, as many of us know from experience with a good service department. I wonder if the dealer management knows how the service/parts department is ripping off customers. Probably not a five star dealership. If it is, it won't be for long.
