'01.5-'04.5 Trailer Plug Difference

accessory position

Kornstad, Don't have the capability to post a picture. I had it installed by a friend of mine. All I know is it slipped right in perfectly.

Kornstad, The prodigy won't fit without removing the ashtray in the '04. I tried to remove mine and was afraid I was going to break it so mounted the controller on the knee bolster under the steering wheel works great there and can easily reach the manual lever.

Maybe I'm thinking of something else, seems the part of the system needed to be installed on the trailer. I'd have to get a new one evertime I delivered.

AS I understand it, the Break Smart controller is an electronic controller that used a hydraulic sensor to sense brake peddle pressure. The connection to the trailer uses conventional electric brakes. Theory would be similar to the Jordan controller, which uses a cable connected to the brake peddle. I like the idea of a hydraulic sensor because it eliminates almost all of the mechanical parts of the system, while still providing true proportional braking.

I am seriously considering one of the Brake Smart systems if I replace my current truck.

Ditto on the brake smart working with many differnent trailers I pull a bumper pull and a utility 5th wheel and it works awesome with both. Never really had to adjust mine after the first day for either trailer loaden/unloaded maybe I am lucky there but setting it is real simple if you have to change it.

plus it detects that one is two axle brake system other is single axle brake system; maybe it changes the programing to compensate?

Wow I was quoted $449 retail. I believe there are a few components and they add up to the $449. I have a wholesale account at a RV distributor and my cost is $329. Of course that price is after the wholesaler takes his cut.

Who did you get it from for $350?

Thanks, doc

Got it from Kohel (sp?) Trailer Sales, hwy 59 by-pass, Wharton,Tx. Actually, it cost $388 and changes with the sales tax. This was for the controller only, no components.

Brake Controller

I just bought a 6000 pound travel trailer. Do I need a brake controller and where do I wire it into. ? I do not have the trailer tow package from DC, but I do have a 7 pin plug. Any help would be great.

Anything over 3000 is supposed to have some sort of brake system on the trailer. I am unsure at what point you need it on each axle.

EB is right, I'm just returning from my first delivery with the BrakeSmart, 3,000 miles round trip. Knew the first hunnert feet I should have been towing with this controller the last couple years. Prodigy was pretty good, bout the best of the inertia's I've used. You really won't know unless you test drive a vehicle with the controller's your considering. If I weren't haulin daily I doubt I'd have popped for the difference. Prodigy is certainly good enough for what RV towing most people do. But if you tow daily, expecially if you tow a variety of trailers, BrakeSmart would be my recommendation. If you don't have EGT & Boost guages installed yet, BrakeSmart can (optionally) display this information and cuts down on the number of guages you need to find room for.
