Is anyone running an exhaust exiting in front of the rear wheel? If so, what muffler and how load is it? Does anyone make a side exit exhaust 'kit', ie. muffler, pipe, and hangers?

Thank you,

Mickey

I left the factory exhaust intact but added a bypass in front of the muffler. It y's off the top of the intermediate pipe, goes above the frame and dumps in front of the rear tire at an angle that is not visible from the side. It is level with the sheet metal and doesn't blacken the paint. It is louder than stock but much quieter than many systems I have driven.

Bob4x4, advise me on this side exit idea with opinion, do's and don'ts: leave convertor on existing 5" s/s pipe, fabricate 5" s/s pipe with Donaldson resonator ( still under the cab ) , fab 5" to 8" s/s transition, and exit just behind cab/bed junction. Do I induce overbearing drone or vibration? Will the exhaust note be pleasing or 'flatulant'? I've got an '05 q/c, long bed 4x4 that runs like a sewing machine and most gassers and all motorcycles drown out with their exhausts. Also , please elaborate on your 'Y' and use of factory hangers. Thanks and good wishes for 2006.

I may be getting old but the 5" is too much for me. I left the cat in place, notched a 3"header collector to mount on the top side of the intermediate pipe-the flange will allow me to add an electric valve to make a totally stock sound when I want quiet. The whole idea in my case was to be able to VENT any excessive backpressure in a very stealthy manner. The entire stock system is still in place. From my add on collector I just fabbed up a 3" pipe to go over the top of the frame then added a 4" dump pipe at a downward angle which is cut at the same angle as the bottom of the frt of the bed so as to not show from the side. I guess I should take pictures to make it easier to understand.

Bob4x4, there is no doubt I'm gettin' old, and an extravagant exhaust is probably an furtive attempt to relive my foolish youth;ie. non-conformity. Nevertheless, your description was perfectly understood. I've developed a habit of accelerating and shifting based on the sound of the exhaust, and here in Alabama almost every other car/truck has an exhaust defect or loud mod. If I don't roll up my window and watch my tach. . I'm shiftin' in sychrony with the rusted-out Duster two lanes over. Life is tough. Thanks.

When we put the '96 engine in my son's '90 he wanted to try a "short" system, so we just used some of the pipe off the OEM system with a resonator and tip that my other son had brought home from work. It wasn't that much louder (I'm a genuine antique person too) to me and he liked it. However after some time he decided he didn't like the way the tire and wheel soot-ed up. So some day it will be changed again to behind the rear wheel ;) [/IMG]#ad

I went with Rip Rook's "shorty" kit. He builds it specifically for the 3rd gen (I think maybe for 2nd gens too??). I got the mufflerless kit because I had an MBRP muffler from another truck.

LOVE it. Under throttle it is much louder (inside the truck) than the full MBRP (normal exhaust route) I had in my last truck. I can really hear what the truck sounds like with the windows down... and in amongst buildings, under an overpass etc it sounds just like a semi when I get on it. Plus on the hwy whenever I go by the big trucks I can still hear my truck. When you get hard on the throttle... especially with a load it vibrates the truck and you cannot hear much else till you let off.

So I guess it's not for everyone. . but again I love it and I love getting asked... "What's that big pipe sticking out right there?"

At cruising speed it drones pretty good... but again is no problem for me. At idle it isn't much louder than other full systems out there.

The only drawback is it turns that wheel black much faster than normal brake dust does. But it doesn't really bother me.

I believe Rip sells the mufflerless kits (God that'd be loud) for $240 and with mufler it's $270. Prices may have gone up as I haven't checked in a while.
