my recently aquired 89 that i put a new frame under slips outta fifth when you let off the pedal. I figure its just a worn out gettie, but i wanted to see what yall think. Man i want a 4500.

Stick a fork in it cuz it's DONE!

I would pull it down for a rebuild or like you suggest put in a NV4500. I think I'm going the NV4500 route as I just dont feel good about putting in that Getrag again only to have it start acting up in the middle of nowhere Montana agian during a blizzard.

It is probably what they call the clutch hub on the 5th gear side.

You have a clutch hub that the shift fork goes over. When you shift it into 5th it may not be engaging all the way. At any rate it is not a expensive fix but it will be a lot of labor to replace it and you will probably want to do the bearings at the same time.

I call it a clutch hub. Some folks call it a slider. Your synchro fits in there between the detents and as you shift the synchro taper stops the gear that is rotating so it will engage. As the brass wears on the synchro hub it starts clunking into gear. I think 3rd gear gets the most wear because thats the one you always hear about tripping into gear. Double clutching helps get the gears matched in speed but then you are just wearing something else out.

slipping out

I haven't been watching your post so don't know if you have fwd in the 89. EZGZ is dead on with the suggestion. If it is fwd, then it is a good bit more trouble labor wise but can be repaired reasonable. From all the posts on the subject it is clear that the Getrag is just a little below the load factor of the average fwd user.

My two wheel drive is now at 400k and the getrag needs the third gear syncro pretty soon. There is a first gen in Texas that has the 4500 setup if it isn't sold. Check the classified. I need the pedals to change over my 93 automatic should you got that route.

Would mine slipping out of granny under the same conditions be the same thing? It's always done it; I figure by the time it slips out, it's time to shift, so havent worried about it. Now if I can find an Eaton 7 speed... .....

Pretty much the same but it is a different slider/clutch. Does yours slip out when you let off or jump out under load. The latter being more destructive in potential especially in the lower gears. Some of the ancient trucks with old borg warner and muncie three speeds would jump out. My grandady had a forked stick that he used to prop his in high. I expect that the Cummins would have enough torque to spit it out anyway. There could also be an issue with bearing condition on the speed bearings for the corresponding gear. Most any manual transmission can get this sort of problem whether it is a truck, tractor or whatever. It is result of wear and in some cases from severe use. But since we only use these trucks for special ocassions and sunday driving, that couldn't be the cause.
