My '99 w/114k miles has a new trick - slow starting, maybe 4-5 seconds like a PSD to kick over. Cleaned AIT sensor, but made no difference. I have a pusher pump installed as well as a fairly new lift pump. Any suggestions?

Is the problem only on a cold start? If it is all the time, my bet is on batteries and/or something in the charging system. Do an amp draw test on the alternator and a load test on the batteries. Also, do an amp draw test during cranking, and see how high it goes. Could also be fuel pressure related. Any DTC's set?

Slow Start- - more

Evan-

Seems to crank at same speed a always, heater grid working, slow start hot or cold, fuel filter almost new,(200 miles) have 3 other trucks fueling at same outlet with no adverse effects. Don't have fuel pressure gage, but opened filter plug and bumped starter to check and got a bath for my trouble! Pretty good pressure build up. Don't know about codes, but will try to get it checked tomorrow.

Thanks for your help,

Denny

How much fuel pres do you have cranking it over?

From what I've been told too much and will have to spin over a few times bfore it fires up.

Steve St Laurent is the guy with specs and exp on this one.

Maybe I can help.

Can you answer a couple of questions for me? Is is slow to turn over, or is it turning over at the normal speed, but turns over several times before it fires? My '99 is doing the latter thing and I think I have figured out the problem. If yours is doing the latter, I will be glad to share what I have found with you.

rashwor

rashwor - - I think mine is doing the same thing as yours - crank speed seems to be the same as always - not slow crank, but now takes several more revolutions to light. It had always kicked over on the first rev. since new.

C. D. Day and all

Here is what I am thinking, but I have not had a chance to prove it.

The other day, I drained the water trap on my fuel filter with it running ('99 model). I do this regularly... maybe I should, maybe I shouldn't. Never really gave me a problem until the other day.

When I opened the drain and fuel started running out, down at the bottom where the drain attaches to the fuel filter, there was diesel running all over the lower valve assembly. I drained a little and closed the valve. The next time I killed and restarted the truck, there was my slow start (turn over several revolutions).

My suspicion is that the gaskets are leaking and letting air seep into the fuel system. The truck is still doing the several revolutions thing when starting. I will check this out when I get a chance and report back to the group.

I hope this is it. The slow start has happened before and the moron dealer :)rolleyes: Joel Snelson  service rep at Mike Perry Motor company, Nacogdoches, TX) refused to listen to me and could not find the problem. This is the service we pay $45+ per hour for?

Calm down, rashwor! Repeat after the TDR member, "I am my own warranty station, I am my own warranty station!;) ;)

Was thinking about changing filter again - also check for air leak- good idea and worth the cost of a filter- I'll give it a try and post results

The first time...

The first time this slow start happened to me was immediately after a fuel filter change by the dealer. If nothing else, it sure was a strong coincedence (spelling?). It had finally cleared up until I drained the water trap the other day and noticed the fuel leak when the water drain valve was opened. :(
