Straight Pipe vs. Aftermarket Exhaust

Im Getting Twins?

on a thread a few weeks back and I feel I may need one. What brands are you using? Pros or cons to each. See sig below. I would like to know what may work best in my situtation. I have a slide in camper and tow car hauler with a CJ on it.

I read hundreds (yes, hundreds) of threads here and elsewhere before getting my BD. I wanted something that worked at low RPM, and the BD does; just about all the way down to idle.

Remote brakes are great if you might upgrade your turbo later on. And the turbo mounts can be a bit restrictive and cause slightly higher EGTs.

I will never be without an exhaust brake again. But I am trying to figure out a cost effective way to upgrade my brake (using the 2004. 5 and newer elbow brake on my truck with a new/bigger turbo will work, but it's a double hit on cost).

If you get a remote brake to start with, you avoid this problem.

But you are in the north, and you will get a bit more salt/weather on a remote brake, where as the elbow mounted rarely gets any of this.

No matter what, getting a brake is worth it. But decide on your path before taking the leap. (I found a good deal on my brake, so it made my decision for me).

Had a Pac on my 96, Have a BD on the 01. BD is better at lower RPM ,IMO of course. Problems I had with Pac, Vaccum cyl went out under warranty, customer service was excellent. I was in the Yukon when it went out towing my 5th Wheel. They Air freighted me one in like 2 days 0 charge. BD, NO problems to date. Both requuire infrequent cleaning of the solenoid. My BD has the filter on a long hose to route it away from contaminates.

I have a turbo mounted Banks and I am pretty happy with it.

Make sure you ask yourself these questions.

Do I want to hotrod this truck?

How much do I want to hotrod this truck?

Your choices for turbos that can support a turbo mounted brake are more limited. So if you want to do allot of hot rodding, go with a in-line mounted brake. If not, go with a turbo mounted. In the end you have to match a turbo to engine Hp.

I also have a Banks Brake. I believe it is the best flowing turbo mounted brake available. Still, it limits one to just a few turbo choices. With a DZ 14 Mach 3. 8's & my APB turned all the way up, I've never been able to reach 1300* egt. Then I don't tow more that 10K lb & that's horses which I baby. No racing the PowerJokes with my horses in tow.

As for the performance of the Banks Break; it has a lot of stopping power. Sure it turns off at 15 mph but I don't see that as a problem. Sometimes I wish it turned on at 25 instead of 30 but I can live with that.

The performance mod's question is definately one to consider. If you plan to upgrade your turbo, I would look at 4" inline mount E-brakes. I wish I had.

I'm happy with my BD turbo mount. Works better then the Jacobs I installed on another truck. I have mine fully manual with the shifter switch. I don't like the auto setups. 150k on front brakes that are a little over half used.

I haul/tow almost exactly what you have. I've got the Jacobs E-brake with the shifter mounted switch and couldn't be happier with it. I live in the Sierra foothills so almost all of my driving is in the hills and mountains around here and I use it all the time. As said in previous posts if you plan on upgrading your turbo go with something that has the ability to handle the larger turbo. Whatever brand you chose will make a huge difference going down the grades. Best upgrade I've done to my truck.

I have the BD turbo mount. I choose it for the lower operating RPM range. It does cost more, but it's the best mod I've done.

I am limited in my BOMBing due to the brake, but I don't want one hanging under the truck in the weather.

After I bought my brake the Banks brake came out. According to the ads it flows better. It also has some sort of controller and splices into the engine coolant temp sensor, among others.

I think the Banks might be a better brake (due to the flow) if it can be installed without the controller. Then just run it manually, with a throttle and shifter mounted switch.

If you have an auto trans it does not matter how low in the rpm band the brake goes but that it only works when the T. C. is locked up. With the DTT setup I have and the shift selector in 2nd the brake will work down to 18mph. When in drive the brake shuts off at 30mph. The Jacobs unit decelerates fine with 10k hooked to the truck.

Jacobs, with 115k on the original brakes, 100k on the jacobs. Wouldn't be without one.

If you plan on ever upgrading the turbo, go with the remote mount.
