Yessir...it is MUCH sturdier then the GemTop equivalent.
It is also substantially heavier then the aluminum GemTop, but of course the truck does NOT care about that one bit!!
That being said, IMO the Caravan lumber rack option was NOT at all that sturdy, and also prone to rusting from the lumber going on and off eventually scraping through the paint. I removed it and had one built by a local aluminum welder. I'll post a pic of it later as its kinda special...the over cab cantilever of the rack was curved (by Paul from Defiant Truck) down in your neck of the woods to match the Defiant light bar that he also built custom for me. Also, the rack mounts on top of the shell and then bolts to full aluminum supports that run down to the truck bed rail INSIDE of the camper, so it can take the weight of a full load of lumber, something the Caravan rack could NOT due without substantial distortion.
