Picked up my new '17 Mega Cab and had a higher capacity hitch put on it from a local installer. I have a 14,000 pound deck over trailer. The one that the installer found that would fit is a 18,000 pound capacity. When he was finished and tried to put the spare back on he found that it would no longer fit due to the increased size of the hitch. I am thinking of finding a lower profile tire. My dealer said that in a temporary use situation that there will be no damage, just get it fixed ASAP. My local tire dealer is already getting in a new set of Michelins and he said that he would even buy the spare too and find me a tire that would fit. Anyone else experience this? I have the 275/70R-18 tires.

I don't believe that is the case. My older Ram 3500 duallies had 2" receivers rated 1000/10000 (weight distributing). The 2016 has a 2-1/2" receiver.

Correct. Even in the RAM towing charts, it says "8. The recommended tongue weight for a conventional hitch is 10 percent of the gross trailer weight. The maximum tongue weight for Class V (receiver hitch) is limited to 1800lb."

Sounds like 18,000 lb rating to me...................
I was informed by the dealer that all factory hitches are 10,000 pound.
I think you have been seriously misinformed................

I agree 100%. The dealer gave you false info and I think you should get your money back. I borrow a tow ball dump trailer that's 14k rated to haul DG for my driveway. I've used it 3 times over the last 12 months and I'm pretty sure that it's over 14k when I stuff the trailer full.

Even the Ram 2500's have a 16,000-17250 lb tow rating (depending on how much the truck weighs). Their tow rating would not be that high if the class V hitch couldn't handle it. You will be able to tow more weight with a bumper pull on a 2500 (or 3500 SRW) than you can with a gooseneck. The stock Class V hitch is good up to 17k+

Sounds like you guys may be correct. I was going off the information I had from my previous truck and assumed it was the same. I had the hitch ordered before I picked up the truck so I guess I had the cart ahead of the horse. The one thing that is confusing to me though is that it is labeled a class V hitch but no where on it does it state a capacity or anywhere that I can find in my owners manual. The new hitch clearly states what its capacity is. I guess my biggest complaint right now is why is the factory hitch not clearly labeled when an aftermarket hitch is labeled?

I'll bet the lawyers told them not to.......:-laf

Sam, you are probably correct about the lawyers! The one thing I will say at this point is that I think I have a much better hitch now. Growing up in and now owning a machining and welding shop that my father started the factory hitch looks like a 10,000 pound hitch. It just looks too light of a fabrication. The new one looks like a heavy duty hitch should look. I am going to bring it up to my dealer but I don't think I will change anything. Here is another point, DOT inspections. Motor Carrier Enforcement here in PA routinely stops anyone pulling a trailer like mine. If it is not marked then how do the creeper cops know you are legal?

Not sure who makes the stock hitch but the one thing that I did find is that the class V is not even recognized by SAE. I can't remember where I saw this, I have been on so many websites the last couple days. If anyone can shed some light on that let me know.

I think, in reality, you placed too much faith in your hitch dealer / installer. It's a shame he actually misled you (a sale is a sale I guess) when you had a proper hitch.....a hitch that was designed and engineered for your truck AND a hitch that would allow you to retain your OEM spare. How you "think" the other hitch is better is another item for debate, though....

Apparently you didn't dig around enough in your owner's manual...or maybe you don't have all of the manuals.
Click on this link http://cdn.dealereprocess.com/cdn/servicemanuals/ram/2017-3500.pdf and go to page 540 of the manual............it plainly states that the Class V is 18,000 lbs max trailer weight / 1800 lbs max tongue weight.

gsbrockman, that link looks like it is the owners manual from Canada? It is a lot more informative than mine, mine only goes to page 340. I see that it clearly states 18,000 pounds but my owners manual packet does not have anything whatsoever on hitch capacity. Unless I have not found it on the Ram website all that I can find is towing capacity, nothing about the hitch. The hitch dealer had nothing to do with pushing it on me. I've known him for 10 years or so, I called him before the truck arrived and said order me a new hitch. 100% my doing. Not sure where I am going to go with right now.

My 2013 manual says 17,000 lbs for class V. Pg. 544.
