I have a squeaky bearing up in front of the motor and I can't figure out what it is... I just put a new water pump in it so I think i can eliminate that from the equation. How do you pinpoint what it is? alternator? tensioner? Any tricks on how to diagnose this? My truck has almost 200K on it... it just started.

Thanks for your help

When does it make the noise? Have you tried taking the belt off and spin the different accessories by hand to try and pin point it?

It makes the noise while idling... and gets faster with the rpms. So it's not a power steering squeak. I guess I might have to take the belt off unless there is some other trick. Thanks.

If you have a mechanics stethoscope or can borrow one you can use it on each item to locate the one making noise. The old time trick is to take a LONG screwdriver put screwdriver end on the item. Cup your hand over end of the handle and ear to your cupped hands Essentially does the same thing as a stethoscope. I am betting on tensioner. Let us know.

Thanks Bob, if it is the tensioner is there a way to lube it up or do I need a new one?

Took off the belt and spun everything and nothing squeaked..... put a new belt on and the squeak went away. I can't believe it was the belt, it did not sound like a belt squeak. Even the mechanic was as sure as I was that the tensioner needed to be replaced but we were wrong.
