I am not sure why ya referenced the trans in the poll. This is because its the belts that chirp, and all of the engines have the serp belt.

I think the chirp is unique and somehow cool.

why trans?

Max-

I had asked this question on a former thread and some of the replies indicated that the manual trans trucks didn't do it. Got me to thinkin'... ;)

Indeed, and judging by the poll results so far, got me thinking too. Wonder whats up with that?

Noting the poll results however, it seems to me that the replies are not consistant with the number of standard shift trucks in the membership. IOW, the standard shifters aren't answering the poll as often as the AT people.

I seem to notice the screech much more in the summer vs. winter.

Kinda like it actually. This came up before and I'll say it again.

PSD guy gives a dissaproving look and says that Cummins sounds like crap shutting down, I say the PSD sounds like crap running!

You pick!

Anyway, it seems that it's no big deal and wouldn't seem right w/o it!!

Auto vs Man.

One friend with a 99 5 spd and 2001 6 spd no chirp. My 2001 with auto and another friend with 2000 auto chirps. My mini poll!

I have only had it once, on a real hot day. Didn't worry about it though, just the mighty Cummins stopping before the serp. belt.

Stop Chirp

The 17:1 compression ratio engine wants to stop FAST without fuel, the rotor of a 120 or so amp alternator just doesn't want to stop that fast, lots of inertia there.

stop chirp

Mill Rat-

Right you are-:)! Also noted that the Goodyear Gator Belt(?) or Gator Grip or Gator Tator or Something Gator is the belt to replace the stock one with:D ... . Jim.

auto vs manual?

Why not 12 valved versus 24 valved?

I bought my 97 auto with under 50k miles. It chirped almost all the time on shutdown. I changed belts and it quit.

Now about 12k later it chirps again. I haven't checked for any oils on the belt or pulleys as it is intermittant. I need to see if it is related to alternator, fan clutch, phase of the moon or wife's mood.

I used to stop my gassers in gear to prevent dieseling. Should we call it gassing instead of chirping in our diesels?

cheers;

John E

That is the audible shut down annunciator.

I would not be able to tell if the engine had shut down after the Turbo Life Saver had timed out and the engine had shut down with out it. :D

No birds under the hood

After the last serp-belt replacement (August 2000), I have not heard a sound from under the hood after shutdown - just the equalizing hiss from the condenser if I had the AC or defroster on.

possible inertia difference between a big heavy flywheel, and a flexplate? f-wheel continues to spin a few degrees further than the f-plate, and coincides more closely with the alternator's halt-speed..... just my own theory, as i do have slushboxed "squeeker"

chirp-b-gone

Mine used to chirp at shutdown. I took a wire brush and cleaned all my pulleys. Then I put a Goodyear "Gatorback" belt on it. Cool belt, lifetime warranty, no chirping. :)

Yep; just the engine stopping before the belt stops turning. Nothing's wrong.

Some do, some don't (chirp). Mine does only sometimes. Probably just depends on a slew of factors like temperature, how clean the pulleys are, age of belt, exact composition of belt,... .

I like the chirp

I like the chirp. Like someone else said, it sounds like a cat getting offed. I can't think of many Cummins owners who wouldn't like that. Besides, how else is the little woman supposed to know that I'm home?

Here's my two cents,

Mine only seems to chirp on hot days or when the A/C has been running. Me thinks maybe the chirp is from the fan clutch being engaged and the extra mass of the fan is still spinning the flat pulley on the back of the belt when every thing else has stopped turning. Sound reasonable??
