Okay, i guess it was to good to be true, as alot of you know i changed out the factory steering shaft for a Borgeson, well noticed today that around the shaft coming out of the steering box and the underside of it, it was wet, wasn't sure at first if it was fluid or all this dam salt that i haven't had a chance to get off that might have gotten wet. Well washed the truck off earlier tonight and yep the seal is leaking around the shaft itself, anyone have a fix or part number for this, I don't think it was the fact that i knocked the factory pin out of the old steering as much as it was probably the prying i had to do in order to budge the old shaft off the splines.....

Its not pouring or anything or even dripping but its leaking none the less. .

How about sucking as much of the old stuff out of the resevoir with a turkey basetor and refilling with some fresh stuff with a good conditioner. If its just starting to weep that might soften the seal for a while till the weather gets better.

There is a thread all, about this operation, poasted by BushWakr years ago. I have no idea how to locate it. It has all info nedded to replace this seal.

The thread, in it's entirety, is printed out on paper and in my files. It contains the dealership part number, but I don't understand it at all. It's been a long time since I replaced mine and I did it when I install the new Borgeson.

This is the number he wrote, "J8130157 Seal kit 82042" Like I said, I have no idea what all that means... ... ... ... ... ... ..... I think I recieved my kit from the Dodge Dealership. Perhaps NAPA will have the same kit as this box is also used on all GMC trucks. It's Saginaw gear.

Good luck

Scott

My box is all slopy and worn out. Gonna send it to PSC to have them rebuild it while the trans is out getting rebuilt... whenever I get to that.

Just bought 93 to use as a service truck. 230 K miles and runs good. There's a coupler on the steering shaft near the steering box that has a lot of play in it. Is this factory or has someone added this coupler aftermarket. Does anyone know where I could find a replacement coupler or does anybody else's 93 have one?

Ooooooooo... ... ..... "J" yer livin on the edge dude... ... . ;):D..... I know I'm gonna hear about that one dude..... ahh well, that's why I make the big bucks in here..... are you buyin that one... ;):D

Yes they all have that joint, best to buck up $$$ and get a Borgeson or Flaming River shaft with a good joint, you can get a kit to rebuild the stock joint from the dealer but they don't stay tight very long and you'll get a bunch of wander.

The new coupler kit from Dodge runs around $40. or so.

I replaced mine around 90k miles ago. That 90k miles has been spread over a 8 year period. I am going to replace it agin this summer when I replace the steering box. As of right now it has almost no slop in it. I think of this a P/M part. If I am droping the steering box off. Its time to replace this piece also.

$300. for a replacement shaft with a U-Joint. No way.

The Dodge replacement coupling is a upgraded version. It isn't near as cheap built as the orginal was.

Philip,

You wouldnt happen to have the part number for the Dodge kit, would you? The dealer around here isnt very helpful, and I would like to just walk in with a P/N and say "Here, I want one. " If you are doing ok 8yrs and 90K later with a Dodge part, I'll go for that, instead of a $200 shaft and u-joint kit.

I know, 10hp penalty for sticking with stock.

Daniel

Thanks for the help guys. If anyone has the part number please post it. Otherwise I guess I'll have to trust the counterman at dealer parts and that's scary! Thanks again guys.

You will be sorry. The borgesen shaft is the best improvement you can make on these trucks and you will never have to touch it again. I tried the Dodge route once and it was just as bad as the original one. The ujoint shaft is the only way to go in my opinion.

I have never used the rebuild kit on my the steering joint, but my truck only had 35,000 miles on it when I got it and one of the first things I did was the Borgeson shaft and it made a huge improvement in the tightness of the steering, any play in that location comes back to you as wander in the steering. This is my second Dodge truck and they have both had the Borgeson shaft and if I ever wear this truck out the next one will get the Borgeson shaft. I hate a truck that wanders down the road.

I just got back for the dealer I work with. The coupler is N/A right now. In the corp parts computer it is showing they are looking for another MFG. The parts guy is going to contact DC tech Tuesday and find out what is going on and if a later model will work.

Well I got the info from my parts guy. The part is NA. No new mfg has been found and none in stock in the U. S. So the outlook isn't good. Probably won't be another production run of them. :(

Glad mine is still in good shape. I don't want to spend $200 to $300 for one of those replacements.

Before someone says something. Yes I have driven one of our 1st gen trucks with one. It didn't steer any different than my truck does. Case500D has one in his 92 W250.

wait until the stock steering coupler goes kapoot as the one i had was, you will know the difference after replacing it... Philip don't feel bad i had a wiring harness mishap last Monday, called the dealer, wiring harness for the rear tail lights has been discontinued for some time, thank goodness im pretty good with electrical wiring, got it fixed and should never have any problem with it again, as soon as weather breaks im going to go over the entire truck with new wire loom and connectors where needed.
