I tried to get my truck inspected and was told I needed a steering column replacement. ???? Six day part order and $1600. I don't feel anything wrong with it. It doesn't stray on the road, doesn't feel lose or wobble or shake. Steers like a dream. How can you tell if you have a problem with the steering column. Maybe the shop needed to up their sales for the month. I am getting a second opinion now.

If a PA inspector is like most other state inspectors who work at gas stations or inspection stations, chances are ten thousand to one he wouldn't know a bad column from a chocolate bar. Sorry for snapping, but that socialist crap just chaffes my hind end.

I believe on your 94 the column is made up of 2 shafts - upper & lower. The isolator and collapsable part is on the lower shaft. Those tend to wear but they actually have a "slop" measurement in degrees rotation. Ask them for a written copy of the specification/measurement set up and what the actual measurement is. If the tilt part is loose, you should be able to tighten that up.

I would just go somewhere else... . of course my inspector just charges me 12 pack of Busch and calls it good:D

All:
Well I did taske it to another inspecting location, told him of the issue, he checked it closly and the truck passed. No problem. I put 6-700 miles a week on this and have no looseness in the steering, movement in the wheel or anything. I was wondering if there was something I was missing but I guess not. Appreciate all the responses.
