I recently took my 06 to the dealership for a clunking noise in the front end. They told me there is a factory kit to fix a design flaw in the steering. It supposedly replaces most of the steering components. Not only is it $850 (installed), but it is on permanent back order from DC. Has anyone else run into this, or are they feeding me big helping of BS?
Thanks

If the kit your refering to is 52122362AE then the info you got was correct. As of yesterday the back order was almost 3000 and they just released about 700 a few days ago. No info on when the other orders will be filled--they had no date.

What does this kit contain? $850 installed - what does the kit actually cost w/o labor?

IF this is actually to fix a steering FLAW, then it should be a RECALL and cost nothing !!

This kit is used to replace some front end suspenison parts that have been thought to cause DW. I think if you take your truck in and complain about DW the dealer ship will replace these front end parts under warranty(if your truck is still under warranty)

There is another active thread about this subject in this section.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'll have to get the part # when I pick it up. The kit itself is $450. They offered to take my money and put me on an indefinite waiting list. No Thanks!

CDonaldson, I totally agree with you. Unfortunately, I'm out of warranty at 52k miles.

I've looked for this thread, but can't find it... . I would REALLY like to read this thread.

My 06 w/23,000 miles hasn't experienced DW, but the front end is "skiddish" or wants to "dart"... . The truck and suspension is completely stock and has factory BFG'S.

Since DW and other front end problems ARE or SEEM to be issues for a lot of people, this goes to SAFETY, which should be something that IS recalled.

I believe that there is a FED website or agency that gets involved in these things?? I will have to do some searching, maybe I can come up with the details for how to pressure this into a recall regardless of how many miles you have past your warranty.

Talked to my local dealership Saturday, took the TSB# and part numbers from the other thread with me. Talked with the S. A. about the issues with the steering, she said to bring the truck in next week and they would do the "official" inspection of the front end and then they could place the order for the upgrade kit. Gotta admit, as far as dealership service departments go, my local dealer and their S. A. is the best that i've ever encountered (props to Ms. Patty!). She also warned me that it could be some time before the parts actually came in due to backorder. Truck has less that 24,000 miles on it, so warranty is going to pick up the check.

This is another GREAT example of the importance of this furum... . THANKS TDR!!!

Just to let you know the Kit does make the truck steer much better, the tires wear better. The kit is about $160 and then you have to buy a new steering Dampner, I would get one from Menroe (sp?) you just have to make a bushing for the menroe one out of a 3/8 pipe nipple... Ok the bad news check out the steering recall thread listed here.....

:-laf That price has doubled, and you still need to get a new pitman arm to keep from interferance at full suspension travel.

My 2006 3500 4x4 has a tight steering box that won't self center after a turn. It is unnerving to have to turn it back. Any ideas?? I checked the steering box today and found out the jam nut on the top of the box was loose. It leaked fluid and was all of the way down. I tried positioning in several different positions and made it considerably better.

Does anyone know what the stock setting for that screw is? It has one full turn from top to bottom. Thanks.

no,the brace supports the sector shaft, that hangs way down. The pitman arm imposes the load too far from the bushing in the steering box allowing flex.
