Hello

My next door neighbor has a 1996 Ram B5. 9. He was working on changing out his Air Temp Sensor. He noticed that was no anti-freeze in the "hole" and poured in one gallon to bring it up to level.

He contacted me because he had problems starting his truck - did not inform me he addited anti-freeze on the intake side.

So. I tighted a battery cable- thinking this was the problem and he started the truck.

Of course he had anti-freeze blowing out the exhaust. The truck was running and when I saw the anti-freeze blowing out the tail pipe I told his to shut it down. He informed me of putting anti- freeze in, thinking, or not thinking, it was required.

So. How can we salvage this issue. Any ideas. It was running and seemed running fine.

Did he miss the bullet or are there issues anyone can think of.

Thanks

JL

The affected cylinder(s) musta been on their exhaust stroke, or the damage would have been catastrophic!

If it seems to be running fine now, he can offer a HUGE prayer of thanksgiving! ;)

Not really much else to be done at this point...

If you had a borescope, I'd suggest pulling the injectors and visually inspecting each cylinder, just in case. If nothing untoward is obvious, look for coolant/water in the oil. If found, change oil and filter; change them anyway if you are 'paranoid'. Bring the engine and oil up to full temp to boil off the worst of the water inside the engine. Then change the oil and filter again. Then change them again after 1500 miles.

Hmmm. Maybe this is overkill and Gary's right. At the least, if there is any sign of water/coolant in the oil, change the oil and filter.

Thanks

I looked at the water and oill - with to cantamination visiable. Have removed injectors and could not determine any problems - changing out oil and filters

and taking truck to a Cummins dealer for final look-see.

Thanks for all of your input. Will keep those interested posted for final outcome.

Thanks

Hello

So far - the Cummins mechanic pulled the injectors and with compressed air- purged the

intake side. No damage to date or detected; but I'm sure the jury is out. I agree with HSMITH. Read the manual and/or take it to a qualified shop. I appreciate all feed backs; but keep them cool - the owner has suffered enough.

Only thing that I've seen happpen is a rod will bend just a bit that cylinder will not have full compresion, will run but not have full power until the rod breaks. I think I'd pull the head and check that all the pistons are traveling to the same hight. If you find a low one thats the bent rod.

"There's one in every crowd" - reminds me of an Uncle who was cleaning out is old tube (yes there were those thingys) TV and noticed a bunch metal buttons were loose in some 'metal cans' so he tightened them… These (some of you are old enough to remember) were the slugs in the IF transformers and it took my Dad 2 weeks to retune the IF strip and get the TV running!!:-laf

End of story.

Truck is back in operation. Gary was right; anti freeeze was dumped on the exhaust stroke; no damage to the engine and the injectors were still fine and were replaced. Did not pull the head, just switched out oil & filter twice.

Thanks for all of your responces.

Cummins diesels are TOUGH!! I even recall some idiot here on TDR who managed to make his run backwards briefly with absolutely no ill effects... His initials were SRath...

The only thing I have left is that " god protects idiots and fools"; and I agree that the Cummins is a great engine - almost fool proof.

:D at least you can joke about it now. I'm sure we ALL have done some stupid stuff like that. I know I have.

Hi Rogan

That was great.

Stupid is as stupid does. This guy has been throught a lot - must of turned off for a while - but again - all is well in the V-12 depatrment. I still cant believe it - starts great-runs great. No problems.

Thanks
