I've been borrowing my Dad's weed trimmer (Homelite) for forever and figured it was time I bought my own.

I used to have a McCullough that was a piece of junk, the motor was too small to keep from bogging down. What size motor should I look for in a 2 cycle trimmer. Weight is nothing I worry about so I just need some of you to steer me in the right direction to a trimmer that wont bog down.

Thanks

Stihl

Stihl makes about the best weed trimmer you can get. Would recomend that you buy one of the larger ones with the gear drive, as it allows the use of blades and other attachments besides the nylon line. Another thing to bear in mind is that most two stroke engines will bogg at low rpm, they have to be run at a suitable rpm to be in their power band. What I am saying is that the weed trimmer has to wound out before you start cutting.

STIHL IS LIKE STEEL

I have a stihl and love it I have borrowed a homlite and it sucked it was a small one but it couldn't take much for weeds with nylon line mine has the blade the string and three plastic blades and it takes alot of crap I mow acres with it around buildings and banks near roads. I let mine wing away at the gov for as long as needed and it has not died yet 3 yrs old. The other option if they make a trimmer is husky( huskvarna ?) they have good products too.

I just bought a top of the line Honda 4stroke. It will cut through a 1" blackberry vine with line head on it. It comes with a great harness to carry the extra weight. I can use it longer than I could my old Echo without getting arm cramps. The handle bars work well too. I highly recommend it.

I'll probibally get flamed for this ~but~

I got the Craftsman. It was regularly something like $120. 00 ish.

They had one left, and someone opened the box so they discounted it. I made sure everything was there, and no gasoline was ever in it. Out the door for $75. 00. Hell, it has a one year warranty, after that I dont care what happens to it.

I only have 100'X100' to take care of anyway.

I have an el-cheapo deluxe Ryobi I bought at home depot about 4 years ago, it has the detachable arm so you can put an edger/blower/tree-trimer on it. I found the edger and blower together for 20 bucks when home-depot discontinued the line. It works great, and for the price i paid (around 70 bucks i think), it's cheap enough to replace the motor section when it breaks. Home depot is now selling john deere branded (and another brand) of trimmers, I'm not sure, but I think they are ryobi too. My neighbor bought one and my attachments fit on his motor unit. Tractor supply carries ryobi now.

Get the smallest straight shaft Echo they make. It'll start third pull and last a long, long time. Can't remember what I paid, but it was worth it.

LarryB,

Is that 4 stroke Honda much heavier than a 2 stroke machine? I've heard about the 4 atrokes but have not seen one. Probably a little quieter also.

I've had Shindaiwa, Echo and Stihl. I like Shindaiwa the best for line trimmers. Their chainsaws aren't so good. I like Stihl the best for chainsaws. Echo for blowers.

The engine is much quieter but the trimmer head still makes a lot of noise. The best part is with so much more torque it doesn't bog down in the big stuff like the little 2 strokes do. Kinda like pullin a heavy load with the Cummins. :D It is heavier but comes with a shoulder harness that is real comfortable a carries the weight easily. The handle bars make it easier to control to. With the extra power is wants to jump around a bit.

This is my fourth trimmer. Each one being bigger than the last. I do a lot of brush cutting so bigger is better for me. If you are cutting just small grass then the smaller ones are much easier to use. I guess it just depends on the job you have to do.

I got a Echo SRM 2300,had it for about 15 yrs, still going and its cut a lot. But when it comes time to get another one it will be a Stihl. :D

Buy a goat. They'll eat any weed they can reach. Actually they will eat anything they can reach. :D

Plus, in Arkansas, they are called "girl friend" :D and you can rent them out to your lonely neighbors :p

My McCullough even at wide open throttle would bog in thick grass, but the Homelite doesn't. I need to find out what size engine is on the Homelite and go one size larger.

A co-worker bought a 4 stroke Ryobi and says it has alot of torque and doesn't bog down. He said he can't tell much difference in the weight between his 4 and a 2.

Lowe's is carrying the 2-stroke Ryobi and they have a 31cc engine and are the attatchment swapping type.

What's a good price on the 4-strokes? I've heard their a bit more than the 2's.

Just the other day I was admiring a husqy trimmer. All I could do was admire though, they had one for 399. 00 and another model for 499. 00. At that price I didn't even look at the spec sheet it would not have mattered what it could do (at least for my needs). I know they make awesome saws but 500. 00 for a trimmer. This was at a local true value hardware store not the cheapest place in town to get stuff.
