I spent the day checking and changing my timing.
I used bighammer's method of finding TDC and found it to occur about 1/8" before the point where the timing pin will go in.
Since I don't have a piezo adapter and timing light I used the dial indicator procedure to determine the actual timing.
Based on the exhaust valve method of locating TDC, my original timing was set at 10 degrees. Using the timing pin it indicated 11. 5 degrees. The engine data plate calls for 12. 3 degrees so both readings are short of specs.
I used a point between the two TDC locations and set the tming to 15. 0 degrees.
I'll be pulling my trailer to Wyoming and back in a couple of weeks and hope the mileage shows an improvement over previous trips.
I can't say the job was easy since I have never done it before but it wasn't bad. I have the Miller kit which helped but I am not impressed with the adapter for mounting the dial indicator. The hole is a little too large and it is hard to hold the instrument stationary. A smaller hole or a second set screw would help.
The dial indicator is OK. I have read some unfavorable comments about it but I had no trouble with it.
What scared me the most was removing the gear and getting it back without screwing something up.
I had to use a big cheater to pop the nut loose but it finally came off.
I took a chance and pulled the gear with the pump set for the new setting and it did not move.
I moved the engine to TDC and after squirting almost a full can of brake cleaner into the hole, I put the gear back on the shaft, torqued it to 150 ft pounds, checked the timing again then put everything back together and it runs.
