Tire problems

Trailer wiring ?: bumper and in-bed connector

So I don't burn them out...

I have lost SIX Good Year tires within fourteen months. Not only my labor but added cost for the difference for wear. The first tire that i lost im now told is four years old. That tire was put on early spring of last year . Total mileage is about 4500 miles. I think we need to request tires other than Good Year when we order a new rv. Any others out there having problems. I forgot to mention i have these tires on my 29` Carriage Cameo Fifth Wheel

Which Goodyear tires did you lose? There has been a long history of problems with the Marathons (15" sizes) and, to a lesser extent, the Wrangler HTs (16" sizes). Those who have room to fit a 16" tire have had excellent success going to an all steel radial construction Michelin XPS Rib commercial trailer tire - I've never heard of a tread separation failure from anyone who has changed over.



On our 30' Jayco 5th wheel, we had $2500 damage from a tread separation on a Goodyear Marathon (non-S model). Goodyear paid for the damage and replaced the tires.



On our 36' Jayco 5th wheel, I was hearing enough failure reports coming in on the Wrangler HTs that I changed them out for LT235/85R-16E Michelin XPS Ribs and never had a problem.



Our current 5th wheel (see signature) provided some good news and bad news. The bad news is that it came with Goodyear tires. The good news is that the tires are LT235/85R-16G G614 Unisteel all steel commercial-type radials similar to the Michelin XPS Rib, but with a higher "G" (110 psig) load range. So far, so good... . :rolleyes:

Have you rolled up on a scale at either a truck stop or moving company? If you haven't you really need to. Unless you know what the axle weights are you'll never really be able to rule out whether you're either overloaded or running right near the rated capacity of the tires.



I can see losing 2-3 tires over a period of time maybe to defective lot or such but since you've lost 6 I'd have to start to suspect something other than just every Goodyear of that type is bad i. e. overloaded axle for tire capability etc. I've seen a few coach manufacturors under-tire on their axles.



I'm not defending Goodyear (I don't own any) but again, if you've lost 6 tires I'd be open to exploring all the other potentials.

Where did you find G series rims to fit your trailer? Many trailer rims are only rated for 50 psi inflation pressure. .
 
The G614 are awesome tires I run them on our box trailer and have been overloaded by 1,500 (per tire)in 100 degree days running 75 no problems ( I did not know I was that far overloaded).



For your wheel needs contact southwest wheel. they are in Dallas and can get you almost any thing you need axle, hub, brake drum, wheel, brake pads, brake contoller etc (just not tires from my understanding)



PS with the tread design it looks like a steer tire and works very well maintaining straight line so it does not like to turn sharp corners and I actually ripped a wheel apart when loaded doing a tight manvuer. traction performance has been great as well no skidding on wet or dry pavement at all with brakesmart controller

They probably came with his new :D trailer!



My Montana came with "G" rated tires, too, that are rated for 80psi.

Yup. ;) They are steel rims that look substantially thicker in cross-section than the run-of-the-mill trailer wheel. They are chrome plated then epoxy coated. I don't know if there are any 16" G-rated (110 psig) aluminum wheels available for these trailers or not.
