how many gallons can you pump after the nozzle clicks off? this morning I put in 5 gal. it was cold so I didn't want to wait any longer , but the fuel still wasn't up in the neck. is this normal?

Fueling

That sounds about right, they are a pain in the a*&&*s to fill.

When I want full tank I carry a 6 X 6 block with me and drive the left rear tire up on it. That speeds it up some but still is not perfect.

I would think that they could come up with a fuel fill system to match the quality of the truck.

My '03 takes longer to fill than any of my other diesels did, including my '86 Ford. A 6X6 block? If enough of us complain, maybe D/C will send us one as a Christmas present TSB;) .

Topping off!

I just let it click off, to much hassle waiting to top off. They will burp at you at times, and what a mess on you, and your truck. :--)

Topping off

The only time I try to top it off is if I want run a check on mileage.

Also if I trip over to Washington where the fuel is from 4 to 6 cents a gallon cheaper I will haul my block a long and fill up well I'm over there.

Here in Oregon we are not allowed to pump our fuel so I let the attendant tend to it and do not worry about a top off unless like I mentioned above.

About 10 to 12 years ago I could buy highway diesel 20 cents a gallon cheaper if it was 300 gallon or more delivery so I used my 500 gallon tank. We only have two bulk dealers here and as diesel trucks got more and more popular they finally decided if we could not buy it cheaper in bulk we would have to use the high priced stuff at their pumps. SOOOOOOOO they stopped the bulk price. :{

Sure glad Safeway came to town, that saves us 3 cents a gallon over the lowest price station in the area. :D

Well check that state off my 'to see' list.

When I fill up I try to remember to take a long a 5 gal. can, then fill it up at the same time. After I get home I just take off the fuel cap again and fill up the tank from the can ( there is no foam so it goes pretty quickly, you just have to stop about half way through but there is no foam it seems to work for me).

Better check off New Jersey, too (Unless it is diesel at a truck stop). Oregon and New Jersey are the only two states in the Union that you can't pump your own.

I think ORegon has come to it's senses. I filled up at a station I normally use when going through northern Oregon and this time they didn't even have any pump jockey's on duty.

I always fill up in New Jersey right off I-84 where NY, NJ and PA meet at the Delaware Water Gap. The fuel in NJ is a bit cheaper. The station has a truck isle where you can pump your own diesel and a car isle where the diesel is pumped by an attendant. Go figure:confused:

I use the 5 gal can trick. I fill the 5 gal can and then the tank. When the nozzle shuts off I go and pay and then use 5 gal can to fill tank. Foam has gone down by then and gas can doesn't have any foam so 1 minute later I got 3-4 gallons more in and I'm leaving. Can't wait to get my in bed 70 gal tank. :D

GEEZ! Well I wish we STILL had gas jockeys, and I know it must be important to some of you but all that worry about topping off a tank of fuel. :--) That and the headlight thing. Geez! Thats the kind of thing that DROVE service writers and service managers to drink.

If I just fill it up until it shuts off the tank reads full but I can put a further 4 1/2 to 5 gals. imperial into it. I usually take the time to fill her right up as it makes a big differance in the distance between fill ups and less chance of condinsation in the tank during cold the weather. In the winter I always work off the top half of the tank for this reason. Pete

Well check that state off my 'to see' list.

For the 4-5 gal I will sit in my truck and watch the "jockey" in the mirror pump the fuel in the 35*, 35 mph , sideways rain, while listening to the game/news/ect.

Or if the wife and I were going to a nice dinner, I don't have to get back in smelling like %@$oline. :D :D Diesel power!

True, in NJ, you're "not supposed" to pump your own gas, but nobody bothers you for the most part. I had one kid bother me once, I heard him hollering, sir, sir, sir, sir, I just ignored him. I wasn't in the mood, I'd been on the road for 12 hours and I was 15 minutes from home.

But, the one Hess station I go to, the Diesel truck Island says "Diesel is self service"

But the other hess stations where the pumps are at the auto island, they will pump it for you.

You know what, people complain about people pumping it for you, but it's sure nice in the winter and our fuel is cheaper than PA or NY, where you have to pump it yourself.

This is my greatest (only) disappointment in my truck.

I like to get in every drop to stretch out the time between filups. My Y2K would squeeze in a gallon after it clicked off. My 2004 will take right at 4 gallons after the click. Thats about 75 to 100 moles of added range. The sustained speed of fill is about a 1 count per . 001 gallon to roll by on the digital pumps. There seems to be a lot of air trapped inside the tank in a compartment that is higher than the vent tube. The only thing that could solve this, IMO is to add another vent in the offending part of the tank. What would be the best way? I do not think it is a foam issue. I can let the foam completely settle and then put is clear fuel and it still needs time for the displaced air to burp back through the filler neck. The one positive I have found is a much larger tank. I routinely get in over 34 gallons and have not ran it as far as my Y2K. It would only hold 32, unless you ran it clenched butt check dry.
